Woodand Waxham clean house at Argyll Park By Mel White DIXON, CA, ·NOV. 18 Rain on Friday watered the track for Sunday's race at Argyll Park where masses of large mushrooms, responding to the wet conditions, adorned the track edges. It came as no surprise that by day's end the low spots boasted wet firm berms and the high spots dust, but in the beginning the track was extremely wet, muddy and slippery throughout. The bikes and riders most capable of handling the sloppy conditions appeared first to initiate the improvement process. It was Open Expert Joey Schlag who grabbed the holeshot but Dave Wood led for the rest of the race. BrianJodry pushed hard in third for half the race then slowed up a bit and came on strong again the last time around. Further back, Dean Shultz and John Saggan were making a race of it. On the last lap they both fell in the same corner, victims of the slick mud (not each other). Moto two began as a replay of the first. Schlag came out in front but could not hold it for a second lap before Wood took over. Jodry moved past Starr Needham to be third in line until Needham wicked it and flew by both Jodry and Schlag to claim second. Jodry became impatient in fourth and put the move on Schlag for third and then Needham to claim second at the checkered. The Open Intermediates were missing Cnlin MacDonald who crashed during practice and seriously injured his ankle, thus ending his hopes for the day and perhaps for a while to come. Rick Van Zant, however, showed supreme confidence by entering the race wearing a white jersey. John Scruggs pressed hard to pass and received for his troubles a solid brown coating to his otherwise blue garbed self. Van Zant's confidence was justified as he made it on across the finish' line looking almost as good as when he began. In the second moto Lee Miller gave up his holeshot to Jesse Guymon by overshooting the first turn; but no matter, Van Zant had it by halfway through the lap and stayed ahead the whole way. This round it was Randy Pearson who had the second position from which he made a serious bid for Van Zant's first place. finishing right on his fender. The first turn re-sorted the Open Novice riders but any way you looked at it Mike Williams and Greg Smith were ahead on the first lap. Brian Mitchell got by Smith but in his eagerness he slipped in the mud, as did Smith, which left the second spot to Frank Sacher who was next in line. Sacher's bike sounded terrible but it kept going and Tom Pietro in third never got close. In moto two Williams again led everyo~e else, but only for one lap. Tom PIetro took over fmt and kept it. Sacher again finished second after battling Smith and Tom Sweeney. In both motos of the 250cc Expert race Dave Wood led from the beginning and Joey Schlag maneuvered his way into second. In moto one Mark Hearn kept his Yamaha in third in front of Randy Pockrandt for half the race and then dumped it. By that time Wood was long gone, almost 20 seconds ahead of Schlag who had another 20 on Pockrandt. In the second molO Starr Needham was on the move behind Wood and Schlag. Needham got by both William Jamerson and Bill Leonheart as well as Mark Hearn for third. Leonheart Jamerson and finally Pockrand; traded around behind Hearn waiting for a chance by. Only Pockrandt made it before Hearn was halted with a broken throttle. The 250cc Intermediates were the biggest group of the day. In molO one Ken Palmer had the holeshot but couldn't keep it; Ray Spore, Jr. took it and could. The second round saw Mark Palmer out in front but soon overtaken by Roger McCoy. Mark never gave up and he shadowed McCoy across the line followed by Spore. The first division 250cc Novices saw Chuck Beck out in front with Bret Preble coming on strong in the first moto. In molO two Nick Bishop took the holeshot and developed the longest first lap lead of the day. Preble was next in line but whatever Bishop was using, it worked! He eased up a bit before the flag, but still came in' .comfortably ahead. The l25cc Expert well in front at the start of hoth molOS was Mike Beier riding a ~llzuki. Each time Dana Waxham tried to catch him with a Yamaha - and did, The first time Waxham took it past when Beier's bike shagged something which sent him over the bars and through a complete flip to a miraculous landing on his feet. Beier was quickly away again only giving up first place while executing his gymnastic feat. In the second moto Beier dropped it momentarily in a muddy corner, clearly a mistake that resulted in Waxham zipping past to finish the day with perfect 1-1-1 scores. • CONGRATULAnONS FIRST PLACE WINNERS SECOND ANNUAL ~ E 0') BOSCH CLASSIC ~MOTOCROSS~ PHOENIX, ARIZONA NOV. 25 I:' 0') ~ 0') 1-0 QJ ..c e QJ u QJ TONY DI STEFANO CHAPPY BLOSE CHAPPY BLOSE TROY BLAKE JOHNBEANER GREGG STERAUN RICK COLLINS .OBBYLEON BYRON BURNER WESMcBRlDE JESS GONZALES CHUCK CHAGMANN BILLY JO CARSON WAYNE HAGAN GARY MANN scon GETTINGER ROY MONAGHAN CURTIS CULBERT nMCLATONE Open Expert 250 Expert 125 Expert Mini Expert Open Amateur 250 Amateur 125 Amateur 100 Amateur Mini Amateur 250 Novice 125 Novice Mini Novice Pee Wee Novice Open Beginner 250 Beginner 125 Beginner 100 Beginner Mini Beginner Pee Wee Beginner 'BOSCH HUB Kaw Kaw Suz Yam Yam Suz Yam Yam Yam ~ .
