Heiberger King of the Hill at Argyll Mark"Jaws" Ingalls (701 picks the Inside line of a Sears Point corner. IBelow lettlln this case you don't want to hang it all out. (Rightl Riders meeting at Disneyland? Park By Mel White DIXON, CA, NOV. 25 Woodland Motorcycle Center and ArgyIl Promotions attracted a capacity crowd to Argyll Park for a D-36 motocross. Many bonus trophi~s and conting~ncy prizes w~r~ up for grabs plus an add~d tr~at at int~rmission; a King·of·th~-hill challeng~ from Kawasaki rid~r J~ff Ward who mad~ a sp«ial trip to Argyll just for that ~v~nt. J~rom~ H~i~rg~r, riding an O~n class maico, won th~ chalJ~ng~ with Donni~ "Jaws" Ingalls devours Sears AFM endurance race By Karl Okamoto SONOMA, CA, NOV. 18 Berkeley's Mark Ingalls, riding without a partner, rode smooth and consistent to win the 1979 AFM Sears Point endurance race on, of all things, a fiv~·y~ar·old Norton. "I told you I could do itl," cri~ Mark, who was runn~rup in th~ 1978 v~rsion of th~ rac~. "My bik~ is a '74850, though it has aU kinds of parts in it. I built it m~lf," said 'Jaws" ~tw~n gulps of appl~ juic~. Ingalls had outlast~ his opposition and had th~ add~ advanta~ of taking no pit stops whil~ most of th~ field rac~ in t~ams. 26 • Ingalls (A~ro Cycl~/Champion Plugs/TT Moton/B~rkely Yamaha) was far from th~ favorit~ at th~ beginning of th~ cold, blust~ry day of racing. Dennis Smith, T~rry N~by and K~nny Farm~r had brought a GSI000S Suzuki (Del Amo Suzuki/Bel Ray/ND); N~ton Hild~brand and K~rry Bryant w~r~ on N~ton's Suzuki GS 1000 (NorCal Motorsports); Chuck Parm~ and Harry Klinzmann brought th~ir self-sponsor~ Kaw; Gordy S~im and Jdf Littl~ brought y~t anoth~r Sup~rbik~ (S&S Kaw Z·I) and ~nnady Liubimsky and St~v~ Epst~in w~r~ on St~v~'s Hunt'prepar~d Suzuki GS. But th~y all had th~ir probl~ms. Smith/N~by/Farm~r w~r~ plagu~d with a bad coil ("Aft~r w~ got it fix~ it ran r~ally w~ll," said D~nnis) and Hild~brand/Bryant's Suzuki bl~w an ~ngin~ on Saturday and again just bdo~ th~ rac~ Sunday aft~r an all· night flog. Parm~/Klinzmann had a list of probl~ms a mil~ long; Gordy S~im got ~xcit~ whil~ I~ading th~ rac~ and crash~ and Liubimsky/Epstein n~v~r got off th~ ground eith~r. Furth~rmor~, Epst~in brought out his AMA Honda CBX as a backup but it too bl~ up with Craig O'Connor at th~ controls.. The 410cc Yamaha of Doug Dra~/ Glen Sho~r/Dav~ Garoutt~/John Williams (Smith Machin~ & Q.uandry/ DKG Fram~/Kosman S~c/Castrol Oil/Harry Hunt! Dunlop Tins/~k~1ey Yamaha) look~d lik~ a good match against ~ith~r Mik~ Ba~~r/Thad. Wolff (Ba~~r Construction Yam RD !l50), G~ Sachs/Tom Chew (R~lin~/ Hi·Point Racing/Smokamoto Racing Yam !l50) or Gr~g Goodman/Rob Stabil~ (Stabil~ Yamaha 550), but all f~ll to Mik~ Braxton/Dwayn~ Chung on a ~If-sponsor~d RD 550. Frank Mazur and Rich Oliv~r t~am~ up to tak~ ~ond ov~rall and first 750cc honors on Rich's KZ 650 (Kaw of Mont~/Torco/Train~Ti~ Lancast~r, CAl. Th~ Parks/Parks/ H~adl~/Yamaha 500, sponsor~d by S&R Ent~rpri~ of Hayward, CA took top 550cc honon. Camaloupi on a 1980 250cc Yamaha right b~hind the whole way. Ward motor~ across th~ finish lin~ last. It seems an ov~rsight has ~~n made by those who giv~ h~avy sponsorship to rid~rs abl~ to carry a sponsor's products first across th~ finish lin~ in th~ fact that Dave Wood is still turning his own wrenches. Red Line Oil helps, but Dave's mechanical handiwork was good ~nough for a c1~an sw~p of th~ Open Exp~rt race. The only rid~rs to stay in tow the first tim~ out w~r~ Brian Jodry, Dan Turner and J~rome H~ib~rger. Heib~rg~r w~nt from a c1os~ fourth to a distant fourth wh~n he slipped down bri~fly in a corn~r. Donnie Cantaloupi was still in th~ pits wh~n th~ gat~ f~lI and work~d hopd~ly from ~hind. In th~ ~cond moto it was Wood c1~arly ah~ad again with Cantaloupi (who start~ with ~~ryon~ el~ this time) and Eric McK~nna switching back and forth in th~ com~rs for ~ond and third. At about mid-rac~ Cantaloupi pull~ off and DNF l~aving third spot to Dun Wiggins until Dan Turn~r cam~ by. H~i~rg~r was futh. Th~ first moto of 250cc Ex~rts ~long~ to Donni~ Cantaloupi who got off th~ lin~ first but took th~ turn wid~ and was rd~at~d to third ~hind H~i~rg~r and McK~nna for a lap. Cantaloupi soon mov~ back into an unchalJ~n~d l~ad whil~ Wood and H~i~rg~r both f~lI and mov~ back to sixth and sev~mh places I~aving McK~nna in ~cond and All~n B~rluti in third. In th~ ~ond moto Wood took th~ ~arly l~ad, but Cantaloupi n~v~r l~t up. H~ b~cam~ a serious thr~at to Wood during th~ last lap, ~v~n pulling up alongsid~, but Wood hung on to win. Th~ 125cc Ex~rt rac~ turn~d into a tight cont~t b~tw~n hol~hoot~r Dana Waxham, Mike Pr~ston, Scott R~buck and Dan Turn~r. Wh~v~r it is at Jorgy's Suzuki who is r~ponsibl~ lor Preston's ,bik~, h~/she is do~ng .it right - in both motos it had what Preston need~d to g~t in front of Waxham and win. In moto one Turner lost it on the st~p downhill section, which put him out of contention, and Rebuck cro~d the finish lin~ a clo~ third. 1n th~ second moto Preston made his mov~ past Waxham into the lead a littl~ ~arli~r and Turner got ah~ad of R~buck and pressed hard ~hind Waxham and Preston but just couldn't g~t by. David Schlo~r was in from at th~ start of th~ l25cc Int~rm~iates folJow~ by Ed Minton and Jim Olson. Th~ thr~ of th~m pull~d out a comfortable lead ov~r th~ pack and by moto's end it was Minton flying in front. In th~ ~cond moto, Cory Cantaloupi and Jack Barton wer~ in front of Minton off th~ lin~ and Barton quickly got ahead of Cantaloupi to stay. They weren't waiting for Minton, but h~ didn't n~oo any charity nor could he b~ budg~d from third plac~, although Bob Lelpdt gav~ it a good try. Minton ~arn~ first overall for his rid~. In both motos of 125cc Novic~ Division One Matt Elkins cam~ from a fourth plac~ start to win. In ~ach case., Mike Johnson was not of a mind to settl~ for ~ond plac~ and he almost didn't. For anyon~ who thought all 125s were y~llow, th~ 125cc Novice Division Two provid~ a contradictory ~y~ full. A red bike riddm by Eric Mashbir got the holeshot and I~d throughout th~ first moto follow~d by th~ y~lIow of Mik~ Holliday and th~ ~n of Rick DeCarlo. Th~ second moto f~atured a similar color ~I~ction but the y~llow was ridden by K~n Cummings who got the holeshot and led for ~v~ral laps. DeCarlo's gr~n bike f~lI to the back of the pack and Cummings did not finish. The two r~d bikes of Eric Mashbir and St~v~ Har~r showed th~ way across th~ finish. 125cc Novice Division Three was a doubl~ h~ader score for B~rk~l~y White who had to hustle to k~~p in front of Chris L~wis in moto on~. but pull~d far enough ah~ad in moto two to produc~ the illusion of c1~ar sailing. Larry Coleman, 250cc Intermediat~, had two first plac~ finishes - th~ s~cond on~ ~arn~ by a s~ctacular riding ~rformanc~. Larry got th~ hol~hot but h~ f~ll at th~ foot of s~ctator hill to r~mount in d~ad last on th~ first lap. To th~ delight and amaz~~nt of ~v~ryon~ watching, Larry pr~d~ to catch and pass ~v~ry oth~r rid~r in his rac~ to cross th~ finish Iin~ fi rst. A gr~a t show! Fift~n-y~ar-old Jerry Cabral was undoubt~dly th~ most satisfied 250cc Novic~ rid~r of th~ day. Du~ to th~ fact that it got too dark to rid~, Dvision Two rid~rs did not ~t a ~cond moto r~ult: 24 unhappy rid~rs.J~rry, in Division On~, not only rod~ both motos but was riding his first ~~r 250cc rac~ (h~ sold his 125> and pick~d ~nough of th~ right lin~ to scor~ a pair of third plac~ finishes. Consist~ncy paid off and th~ two thr~ earn~d J~rry th~ first overall trophy. Want to try an O~n bik~ n~xt w~k,J~rry? Results OPEN EX: 1. 0""" Wood IVaml; 2. Dan Tur_ lMaiI; 3. Jarome Heiberg", IMaiI.
