·._._._._._._._._--._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._.-._._._._._._._._._._._._. A group of moped MXers gets underway at Saddleback's NMAIDerbi bash. Bembaum, Paul Denis, and Todd Brandt. Bembaum and Denis fought for second place until Berbaum dropped from the competition com· pletely. Second moto action saw Hendrickson once again pull into the lead for yet another 30-second lead over second place Denis, followed by Bembaum and Brandt in fourth. Event two brought the 16 years and older riders, one· and 2-speed bikes to the line. Jim Beckers of Huntington Beach built an early lead 00 his modified Puch followed by Ro~rt Capehart, Bill Brown and Scott Schneider. The riders followed this order until Brown and Schneider exchanged places at the halfway point. Moto number two brought little change in the action as the riders finished up in the same positions. The Iii·plus Variable Speed class brought perhaps the fiercest competition of the day. The battle ~twttn Wally Thompson and Jim Beckers was on. They battled over first place for several laps until Beckers fell and dropped to seventh. Motocross Action's Jody Weisel followed close behind with Ro~rt Capehart and Paul DeLeone. Capehart passed Weisel on the last lap for second place while DeLeone fmished fourth. Wally Thompson and Bay Area Bultaco's Harry Phelps did battle at the start of moto two. Phelps got by Thompson in lap four to take the lead and the checkered flag. Thompson got off halfway throul{h the race in the "gnarly" water hoTe provided on the bad side of the track. Beckers then pulled into second followed by DeLeone, Weisel and moto one winner Thompson. The next two events were cenainly tbe mOlt colorful. Event number four was tbe Powder Puff c1asII fonawed by the over 50 gang. It's hard to say who was wone. The girla chatted as they rode around together and occasionally forgot a tum or two and bailed off. Only two girls finished moto one. rust place went to Kim Daves fonawed by Carol Small. An the girls managed to finish moto two but not before each took a splashing ride through the mudhole. The old-timers were great - they brought more laughs than Steve Martin could on his best night. Many of the spectators moved closer to the mudhole to catch a glimpse of these "old guys" maneuvering their way through the mud and that extra large puddle next to it. Perhaps something should ~ said about the elite group of men who participated in this event. - There were men like Carmen DeLeone ~ of Derbi, Ken Wyman of Sport Mags, and Ron Hendrickson and Jack Denis of the NMA. It was Greg Ott, however, who made his way to two first place finishes on his M & J sponsored tricked·out Derbi. This mao simply blew the doors off the rest of the riders and lapped half of them in the process. Perhaps he wasn't really 30. Jody Weisel placed second followed by Bruce Bembaum. The final event saw Lance Sallas rilie his Harry Klemm prepared Derbi sponsored moped to an easy first place finish. The only real competition came from Wally Thompson and Mike Hanley. The second moto, however, was something to behold as the 20 riders rounded the mudhole, something happened - half of them went down. Some of the riders were still picking up their bikes and attempting to start them when leader Lance Sallas came around for lap num~r two. The guys were having so much fun playing in that mudhole most of them forgot it was a race. All except Sallas and the two guys chasing him - again Hanley and Thompson. Somehow they avoided taking a bath in the mud. The NMA has decided to include a moped class in their annual Santa Claus Grand Prix to be held Dec. 16 at Indian Dunes. So if you own a moped and your name isn't Bob Hannah call the NMA for all the details on the next MPX. Results UNDER 15 OPEN: 1. Kurt Hondric:lclIon 10.1; 2. Jackson Jams at DeAnza By Ron lawson SUNNYMEAD, CA, NOV. 11 With less than three months of Pro riding under his belt, Rick Jackson has become one of the top 125cc rideJ:S in Riverside County on his Anaheim Suzuki. At DeAnza Cycle Park last wttk he proved it by putting himself in front in bothmotos. When Jackson jumped on top of the first race, Scott Manning and his factory-supported Honda were in his shadow with Redlands Suzuki rider Danny Burtt right ~hind. Jackson slowly pulled away while Manning and Keith Williamson leads eventual DeAnza 2SOcc Pro winner Curt McCuiston. Burtt got into a one on one race with Manning holding the edge. It was on the seventh lap that Manning finally got some relief when Burtt's machine started to sputter and cut out. B.urtt pulled off the track thinking that his race had ended when the trouble suddenly cleared up. He got bad into the race before fourth place Dave Eropkin (DG/Suz) could catch up, but Manning was long gone. Jackson finished with a big lead and was ready to go when they lined up again. This time, however, Eropkin was ready and he pulled ahead on the first lap. Jackson was right on his tail with Manning and Burtt following close ~hind as they rounded the first lap. Soon Rick Lee (Suz) put himself in the top five by passing Dave Coyle (Suz) and shortly after that, Jackson also moved up and took the lead. The next few laps looked like a replay of the first round with Manning and Burtt having at it as their battle carried them past Eropkin into IecOnd and third. Burtt kept the pressure on high for the n;u of the race. but Manning held out to f~ IecOnd again. Jackson had a lead at the finish equal to his first moto's. The 250cc Pro class saw a new name in the area take the win in both motos.. Curt McCuistion (Kaw) took his John Petersen KX250 to a seventh place start in the first round, but improved that position to third at the end of lap one. Greg Zitterkopf (Mai) was in the lead briefly, but carburetor troubles dropped him back to last place. Then the read went to Keith Williamson (Yam), who led for almOlt half of the moto with McCuistion and Craig Gormley (Yam) pushing him. Then . McCuistion got by, but Williamson managed to hold off Gormley for the rest of the race. In the next round, Gormley shot • into an early lead witl1 both McCuistion and Williamson in tow, making it a thrtt way race. On the fourth lap, Williamson made aD attempt to pass Gormley, but got out of shape and was passed by McCuistion instead. One lap later, in the same spot, McCuistion made a clean pass on Gormley and led the rest of the race. Coming in a close second and third were Gormley and Williamson over Florence Manapany (Suz) and Zitterkopf. In the Mini class the Intermediates were stormed by factory Honda rider Todd Hewatt. In both motos he diced with Don Sigrist (Suz), but a second moto crash put Sigrist out of the action and Skip Godinez in second. Todd's brother Scott, also on a factory preproduction CRSO, took the Mini Expert class over Gary Carney (Yam). Results MINI BEG: 1. Johnny _lSuzl; 2. rona IIonigini lYan!; 3• ......,. ~ lSuzI.
