&veral used the opportunity to
sha~n their skills and fully dial
th~lves
in
on
quarter-liter
machin~ry, as would be u~d at
Anaheim, and when the gate dropped
for the first 250cc Pro moto, David
~rig (Esc) flew away with the hole
shot.
.
Huff Hadl~y stuck his Maico right
behind Gerig and grabbed the lead as
they bounced up the uphill.
However, ~rig refused to be
flustered by th~ move and cooly passed
Hadl~y back as they rounded the top
of the hill.
~rig proceeded to pull out a small
lead
which
remain~d
fairly
comfortable until the last few laps of
the moto when JeffJennings (Hon) and
Steve Rhyan (Mai) ~gan closing on
him.
As they started the last lap, J~nnings
appeared to ~ ready to nt ~rig,
which he almost did when the hapless
Suzuki rid~r slid out in th~ first
sweeper.
Though unhurt, the fall rekgated
~rig to third. In fourth came Mike
Tri~ aboard a n~ 1980 YZ he was
haVIng problems dialing in, with Alan
Smith (Hus) a c10sr fifth.
Moto two saw Rbyan out front in his
quick, dfici~nt manna until midway
through th~ rac~ wh~n his bike thr~
its chain, d~olishing th~ rear hub in
th~ process.
J~nnings was more than willing to
fill in for Rhyan, though, and finished
the race num~r one. Smith got by
Tony Wanket (Yam) in the late going
for second with Tripes fourth again
and third overall.
A f~ thumpers showed up in th~
Open Pros, anxious to get track time
in ~fore the Four-Stroke Nationals.
P~e Wank~ (Yam) barely outdragged th~ rest of th~ field to the first
tum .
Lee Ramage (Mai), disgusted with
him~lf
for not getting his usual
holeshot, tried to make amends for
that by sn~aking past Wanket after th~
ledge.
Wanket could not and would not be
had, tbough, and regained first less
than a lap later for good.
Pierre Karsmakers came from n~ar
the rear of the pack on a beautiful
blue Yammie Thumper, picking off
riders one at a time with calculating
precision that left him runner-up.
Ramage came by next with Scott
Slayton (Mai) and Bill Jewell (MMM)
in tow.
Wanket dominated each lap of the
~cond moto to pick up the overall win
hands down.
Behind bim, Mr. Bill sepnt the
entire moto trying to figure out how to
slip by Ramage. Unfortunately, a last
ditch effort on the final lap opened the
door for Steve Martin (Yam) to break
tbrough and Mr. Bill ended up fourth.
In the overall standings, Martin also
ended up on the winning ~nd of a
three-way tie for third with J~ell and
Slayton..
In the 125cc Pros, ~rig stroked his
small bore Suzuki the best, snatching
the lead immediately.
J~nnings started off about fifth, but
moved to ~ond on the initial tour of
the course. He followed ~rig for a
while th~n took him on the hill.
It appeared that J~nnings was thm
headed for an uncont~ed victory
until lap six wh~n he slowed abruptly
o~ the downhill with a suspected crank
~Izure.
~rig obligingly took the lead back
and held it to th~ checkered, ahead of
Paul Thede (SoP), Eric Baker (Suz),
Bobby Sullivan (R&D) and Ross
Maeda (Suz).
The second moto saw a running
battle the entire way between ~rig
and Th~de. Always in striking range,
the Suzuki of Pomona rider was n~ver
abl~ to muster the superior speed
n~cessary to sn~ak past ~rig.
Don Fuller (Suz) rode around third
for th~ whol~ race with Baker and
