Shoemaker and
Rawson on the
rise at Sprockets
Park
By Super Funky
BAKERSFIELD, CA. NOV. 4
Mike Shoemaker took his International MC/Condints Cycle
Service Yamaha to a win in the
125cc Pro class and he was the
only 250cc Pro to show up; Mike
finished both molOS to qualify for the
official win.
125cc Pro's lOok to the track first
with Dave Lynch holeshotting Randy
Lewis aboard a 1980 Husky, J~rry
Shore and Mike Shoemaker. On lap
three, Shoemaker passed Shore and
Lynch was still leading Lewis. This
order continued till the half-way point
when Shoemaker passed Lewis and
Shore faded back with transmission
problems. With Shoemaker now jn
second Lewis began 10 fade back.
Lynch tried to hold off Shoemaker,
but to no avail - the Shoe put the pass
on for the mota win.
Second moto action saw Lewis
holeshot his new Husky while hot on
his heels were Shoemaker, Lynch and
Shore. Shoemaker passed Lewis on lap
two and began his disappearing act;
Lewis hung on to second and second
overall and Lynch picked up third
. overall.
.
The 250cc Intermediate class was a
cake walk for Randy Harden, but not
SO easy for Joe Bray who fought all the
way for second overall.
Paul
McDonald ended up third.
500cc Pro victor Steve Rawson did
some fancy maneuvering to capture
the win in his class. First moto Darren
Oliver holeshoted for the lead ahead of
Wally Koch and Rawson. After a few
laps, Koch had the taste of a mota win
and he began pressuring Oliver. Koch
put his last effort in right before the
finish line and fell, letting Rawson
take second. Koch was third.
Second mota action found Oliver
leading, Koch second and Rawson,
going down in turn one. A few laps
laler Oliver jammed his knee in a
comer, dropping him out, while
Rawson moved into third behind
Brian Vargos. Rawson. on the move,
passed Vargus for second. With the
white nag out, Rawson snuck up on
and passed Koch. Rawson took the
overall with his pass; Koch finished
second and Vargus third.
Hickman, Miller
tackle Tulare turf
in style
By Jerry Parsons
TULARE, CA, NOV. 11
Tulare's motocross track hosted
it's second event of the season
with the track improving every
race; Robbie Hickman agreed
this as he left the track a winner.
Mota one got under way in the
125cc Intermediate class with Steve
Lacey pulling the holeshol. Lacey was
followed by Randy Brown who was
pushing hard for a win. Robbie
Farmer was also trying hard for a good
shot as he chased after Lacey and
Brown. Farmer was soon overtaken by
Robbie Hickman who had been
10
Steve Lacey 19811 and ~obert Cocagne mixed it up right down to the wire at Tulare,
1
working up from sixth place. Hickman
soOn began putting pressure on Brown
with his wide open style but just
couldn't get by. Lacey finished first
with Brown second followed by
Hickman fmishing third.
Round two got off much as the first
one with Lacey grabbing the holeshot,
only this time he had Hickman
breathing down his neck. Hickman
had heavy odds in his favor, being the
trailing rider, but his problems had
only just begun as Robert Cocagne
moved into the picture. The Lacey,
Hickman and Cocagne battle .lasted
until lap five when Cocagne overtook
Hickman for second. Hickman, upset
by this move, wicked on it a little
harder to overtake Cocagne and
Lacey. By lap seven Cocagne and
Lacey had swapped places several
times with Hickman starting to stretch
his lead. By lap eight Hickman pulled
in for a hard earned win" with Lacey
finishing just a knobbie in front of
Cocagoe.
The Old Timers Vets race seemed to
be equally matched. Ron Miller
showed that he might be older, but
he's not a bit slower. Miller showed his
domination by pulling the holeshor for
moto one, Although Miller was not
alone, Leon Price was making sure
Miller knew he was there as they
rounded the first turn. Price didn't
give an inch to Lee Naevry who was
running third as they chased after
Miller. This chase lasted until the
checkered flag which Miller reached
firast and Price second followed by
Naevry for third.
Mota two looked like a repeat of
moto one with Miller pulling the
holeshot followed by Price, only this
time Ron Clawson got into the picture
as he chased after Price. By lap three
Clawson's pressure on Price payed off
as ~rice bit the dust. This left Clawson
running second behind Miller. Price,
who was running back in fifth after his
crash. was be,pnning to gain ground as
he moved . back up to battle
Clawson. This battle lasted until the
checkered flag where Clawson finished
in front of Price. Ron Miller took
home first overall.
