United Sidecar
Assn. holds eighth
annual Rally
By Harry Fisher
LOS ANGELES, CA, OCT. 27·28
Sidecars started arriving for the
eighth annual Sidecar Rally at
the Crystal Springs area in Grif·
fith Park from as far away as
Oregon and Washington to the nonh
and as far east as Texas and New
Mexico. They arrived in their Sidestriders, Jupiters, Urals, Watsonians,
Velerexes, Hitch Hikers, and even
more than this writer cOJild even figure
out a name for.
Doug Bingham, president of the
United Sidecar Association, put
together a fine display of motorcycles,
along with the So. Calif. Sidehaclr.
Association, another local association
who works at bettering motorcycling.
Highlight of the Saturday events was
a feature film from the 1950's, Pace of
Thn"lls, which covered a little racing,
street riding, and other motorcycling
events ofthat day'.
Sunday, more sidecars arrived and
the rally was officially opened. Some
of the unique motorcycles on display
included an antique 1911 Pope which
the owner rode around the park to
show us that it did still run, a couple of
Vincent Black Shadows, an old army
BMW sidecar complete with machine
gun, and several modem day turbo
charged Hondas with spectacular
paint job and body work.
The Sidehaclr. Association put on a
fine display of their member's racing
machines, including road racers, TT
racers, motocross racers, and desert
rigs.
All in all, it was a fine day for a
picnic in the park, a terrific spot for
meeting old friends, and a spectacular
showing for a great organization.
AME hosts final
Saturday night MX
By Super Funky
BAKERSFIELD, CA, OCT, 20
AME held its last Saturday night
motocross race of the season and
the pambility of rain again scared
most of the crowd away.
All Pro classes were run together
and Andy Jannings took his 426cc
Yamaha to two holeshots and moto
wins as he left Roger Stewan (Suz) and
Dave Rogers (C-A) to battle for second
overall in the Open Pro class. Stewan
and Rogers swapped moto placings;
with Stewan winning the decision.
The 250cc Pro class was almost as
limited in excitement and action as
Mike Shoemaker won the first moto
ahead of Dan Thompson. Thompson'
took the holeshot for the second moto
and did a fine job of holding off Shoemaker, who was right on LOp of him
the entire moLO. Thompson was the
overall winner with Shoemaker taking
second.
. . Jerry_Share claimed tWQ firs.t place
International Track of Indian Dunes
was packed with Beginners and
Novices, going for their share of the
50% trophies up for grabs at the end
of the evening.
Two divisions of 125cc Beginners
had to be run, and in the first division
it was Randy Lippie running away
with both motos over Bobby Kotanjian
in the first round, and Kenny Aitkens
in the second. Second overall went to
Aitkins' 5·2, over Ray Ossenkop's 5-4.
In Division Two, Jaime Zamora put
together a 1-2 score to defeat brother
Pepe's 4-1 tally. Bruce Banels put in a
2-4 four ride for third overall.
Kent Banels was the main force in
the 250cc Beginner class, as he took
both moto wins on his Scotts of
Montrose Honda. Second went to
Rodger Williams with a 2-4 score and
third was captured by Wayne Kirk's 6-
2.
In Open Beginner competition, Jeff
Leckiclt and Dave Pintar traded moto
wins and third placings in their battle
for the overall win, and in the end it
went to Pintar, with his second moto
victory. Robert Johnston and Mike
Gatton traded seconds and fourths in
their fight for third overall, and
Johnston took that one.
John Peters and Blake Vitali also
went at it with identical moto scores in
the l00cc Beginners, with the nod
going to Petters. Clyde Yokoi grabbed
thi·rd.
In Mini Beginner dicing, Tony
Puga took the overall after first moto
winner Alan Lippe DNF the second
moto. Chris Balader went 2·2 for
second and third went to Jason
Davenport.
Highlighting the Novice classes was
Town and Country Honda rider Paul
Bebek. Bebek put together a pair of
moto victories to win the hotlycontested
250cc
Novice
class,
defeating John Biffle and Ron
Nicoletti.
In the I25cc sector, it was Frank
Costonzo's 1-2 taking the win over
Billy Fullmer and Lance Johnson.
Open Novice honors went to Don
Cossey, Jim Wyrozunski and Roben
Hixson.
The best ra~ of the night was in the
Mini Experts, the class which is
dominated each and every week by
Yamaha's "Earthquake" Erik Kehoe.
Kehoe pulled his usual runaway in the
first moto, but in round two Doug
Gentry, who was runner-up the first
moto, took the holeshot and began to
pull a lead over Kehoe. ~or six long
laps, Kehoe fought to catch Gentry,
but for the first time all season, Gentry
was strongly holding on to first place,
and the overall win. As the duo
headed for the last lap, Kehoe made a
hard charge, but down the backstraight and into the final tum Gentry
was in total command. Then, in the
last tum, Gentry went for an inside
line instead of hitting the berm outside
the tower tum, and his RM Suzuki
went spinning in a circle, corkscrewing
Gentry into the ground and giving
Kehoe the win and overall.
