Some ofthe mightiest competitors in drag racing
history were blown away by the force of what
one IDBA official called the "worst storm to hit
the Gulfsince Frederick:'
Hardest hit was the Pro Stock class in which
forecasters had predicted a Sid Pogue/Terry
Vance duel. But Vance's Suzuki was hole-shot in
the semi-finals by Pro Stock's reigning First
Lady, Vicki Farr, on a KZ1000. Vicki's win put
her into the final against fellow Oklahoman and
mentor, Sid Pogue. First at the big end was
Pogue's Zl-R, for the win and the 1980 Pro Stock
No.1 plate.
,
The Top Fuel winner was yet another Oklahoman, who retains the IDBA crown for 1980.
Drag racing's King, Kenny Annesley, stormed
his double-engined Kawasaki Fuelerto a 7.75
second/178.92 mph victory over Marion Owens'
Harley-Davidson double.
For the Super Eliminator win and 1980 No.1
plate, Ohioan Ken Blackburn's Kawasaki thundered to an 8.13/161.87 mph win over HarleyDavidson-'mounted Ray Price.
