is needed, but it must be regulation that taltes into consideration the desires and needs of all the people. I know that administrators are needed, but they must be willing and able to deal fairly and in good faith with the public. These administrators must also have an understanding of the spom/ activities they are regulating. The recent affair with the 1979 Check Chase shows that you and the BLM possess none of these attributes. I feel you should resign. I intend to continue protesting your actions, any way I can, until the end: until you have destroyed everything I fInd bealuiful in the California desert or until we have a rational land use policy. On Nov. 24 I will be in Barstow. I intend to stand up for what I believe and feel is right. I c~n do no less. Mr. Hiller I chose to have this letter published so that your staff could not lose it, as they have so many others. 1 use my pseudonym to avoid a cOD· frontation before Nov. 24. See you in Barstow. It's obvious, and was last year. that the Nevada BLM is concerned about public desires and I appreciate thad It is also obVious that the California BLM is nod Why should we have to depend on Nevada for our playground? My taxes suppon California - not Nevada. I choose to live in California and if I wanted to live and play in Nevada. I would move there. Son of Desert Duck had some excellent ideas regarding (he BLM laying out and marking an acceptable coune. Why not? Are my taxes used only to support a fight against an honest citizen, and not used for even considering my desires? My taxes are used to consider Sierra Club interests - why not mine? Beatty to Vegas is not the answer as far as I'm concernedl Our fight is in California and I for one intend to keep it herel My grandchildren, their grandfather, uncle and I will be on the trail between Barstow and Las Vegas, Nov. 24. 1979. as our protest to the power-mad BLM antics in California. And we will have a happy, peaceful daydoingid Suppon the Duck - send a buck. Long live all the Ducks. And please write your letters! GRANDMA DUCKBACKER More Bernie! More Duck bucksl First. I'd like to thank you for your good covera~ of the National Trials events and many of the local events: RMTA,etc. Second, I'd like to voice my disappointment over the lack of coverage for America's first-ever World Champion Trials rider. Bernie Schreiber is only the fourth American rider to gain World Championship status. Kenny Roberts has not yet gotten the press coverage he deserves, but has gotten far more than Bernie. Let's see an interview or a season summary. Third, after sending my third or fourth contribution to the Phantom Duck today. my family and I began wondering how a trials bike would work on a desert -type trail ride. I think we'll probably ftnd out about Nov. 24th. somew~ around Barstow. Word has it that some riders from central and northern Utah might be riding at the same tilM and place. Hope we don't ~t in their way. ED OLDROYD Cedar City, UT Schreiber intenJiew made well beft1Te you wrote tlUs letter, Ed, and the finUhed interview will be running in one of the nextfew issues... Editor. if Bernie assignment wtU Zonker on the loose Heaven help us for apparently we have another Saint Joan on our hands. Her name is Patricia lonker and last week KABC talk radio gave her con· siderable air time in which to continue her diatribe against motorcyclists. During her interview she reeled off a string of statistia so absolutely ridiculous as to leave me gasping. I don't know what Ms. lonlter's credentials are but she left no doubt that she is out to string us up by our thumbs (or throttle cables) until we agree to park our two-wheelers forever more. Suggest that we demand that KABC radio give Dr. Harry Hun equal time. THOMAS K. McGEACHIN Santa Monica, CA 0.. Mr. HUller. . . On Nov. 24, 1979. I am going to go trail riding. I am going to ride from Bamow, CA, to Las Vegas, NV. I have no intention of knowingly breaking any law. but I demand my right to use public land. I will ride on existing roads and trails. in a manner which will allow me to observe the many wonders and beauties of our public land. While I will be riding alone, I hope to see many others. Why? I wish to speak with them. I want them to understand how you and the BLM are destroying their spon. I want them to know that by knuckling under to you, they are not preserving the desert environment, but insuring that our public land will be leased or sold to anterests which will strip its resources for private profit. Mr. Hilber, I know that regulation I've recently written to Gerald Hillier of the BLM, stating my views about the use of chemicals to defoliate the Nonhern Forests of the "scrub" 10 that commercial logging can proceed. It has been proven that these chemicals have caused miscarriages, and birth defects. mainly cleft·palates and "hare-lip." I find it difficult to believe these are the same people who are denying the use of the desert for the ORV people because they will disturb the jack rabbits and blunt· nozed lizardsll How two-faced can the BLM be rabbits are more imponant than babies? Now the BLM is playing Godl M.WEBFOOT Duck bucks When I mailed this letter. Donate now, before it's too latel KEN BUNTING Camarillo, CA A poem of the times 'Twas the week before Checlt. Chase And all through tbe gara~ Not a creature was stirring Not even my'Dod~. My leathers and boots were Annoralled with great care In hope that race day Soon would be there. After working on my scooter I finally went to bed While dreams of racing through puckerbushes Danced in my head. To race from Ludlow to Parker Could hardly be true. Until my dream turned into a nightmare And we got the screwl "Check Chase cancelled!" I yelled it again Thanks to G. Hillier and the boys of theBLM. I'm so mad and this may sound rather silly But if I had the chance I'd tum Hillier Into a bowl full of jelly! But I'll keep writing those letters And you bet I'll take a stand. 'Cause I'll stop riding the desert
