Klaus Spcedworks Jcmco Harley with a 25.09. They were the best of the 18 Expert rider field and kicked off the afternoon program of 57 Novices and 48 Juniors in eight respective heats, semis and finals plus a special Oklahoma Championship Race. With all thrcc Regional Champions competing, Jim Felice from west, Scott Adams from central and Taylor White from cast, the stage was set for some of the best Novice heats ever seen. White from Fe Lauderdale, was first heat winner; Gary Phillips of Cinncinati took the second heat; third heat went to Steve Pinkel of Belleville, III; Pekin, Illinois' Tom Colson won the fourth . heat; Central Champion Scott Adams on his Dennis Latimer Yamaha took the fifth heat, and Western Champion Jim Felice of San Jose won the final heat. Junior Heats were won respectively by Peoria's Jeff Marramore. Rick Rcswebcr of Beaumont, Texas, Mike Raggan. Noot Irwin of Georgia, BellcviJle Honda's Tim Mcnens; and' OltJahoma City native DavidJoDCS. "Heartbreak kid" hoDClra went to central high point Junior Bubba Shobert of Lubboclt when he brolr.e a chain while battling it out with David Jones and Freddie Spencer, which eliminated him from the program. The first Junior semi saw Tim Mertens and Eastern Champion Bob Crabbe run under a blanket in a battle royal all the way to the chcdr.cred with Mcnens the winner. Second Junior semi found David Jones winning with a good lead, followed by Freddie Spencer and Rick Reswebcr. Experts went direct from time trials to two semis. Bubba Rush earned the honors in the first race followed by Chubby Armour, all time track record· holder for O. K. City. on his Bill Brown Harley and old timer Sonny Burres, of Portland, OR. Second semi saw Joe Wilson and Exenia, Ohia's Scott Drake battle it out with Wilson winning and DwayDe Houghton of Dawson Springs, KY third. The' flag dropped on the Novice final and the crowd was on its feet as ~estcm Champion Jim Felice flew mto tum one followed by Scott Adams, Taylor White and Belleville Honda's Steve Pinkel and the race was on down the baclt stretch. Adams pushed Felice handlebar to handlebar until the third lap when Adams nosed ahead. Lap four saw a side by side duel through every comer with Adams fmally keeping the groove while a full tum behind, Taylor White was leading the rest of the pack with Dodge City's Phillip Culver edging past Pinkel for fourth. The fmish was anyone's guess right up to the chcck.crcd but there they were - winner, Central Regional Champion Scott Adams on his Lattimer Yamaha; second, West~ Regional Champion Jim Felice on his Champion, Klotz, MXL special; and Eastern Regional Champion Taylor White all the way from south Florida. The crowd wlls ready for more and they got it as Junior Tim Mcnens blasted into turn one of the Junior main. Mertens, Montana's Todd Giesick, and Rick Rcsweber opened a' gap over the rest of the pack down the backstretch, but lap three saw Freddie Spencer catch Resweber and pass him with I?ave Jones moving into .ruth. It was sull anybody's race by lap five with the first five places nose to nose, led by Mertens, Giesick, Spencer, Resweber, and Jones. The rest of the field. way behind, was led by Oklahoma's Tommy Cartwright with Georgian Noot Irwin on his tail. Spencer moved into third on lap six but slid out of the groove which let Crabbe grab third and Rcsweber back into fourth. The fint thrcc places were still riding as one blob, with Menens leading and Jones, coming on strong, moving into second at the white flag. At the finish, Mcnens, Jona and Gicsick were tail to nOle folJowcd by Resweber, Spencer. Tommy Cartwright aDd Noot Irwin. After a fabe Mart that turned the whole field Icl<- for a practice lap, the Experts were all zapped in tum one by Sonny Burres. Houston's Bubba Rush was all ready to show where he was going by tum two and he set sail down the back stretch followed by Burres, Scott Drake and Joe Wilson. By lap t~ree ~ush had a commanding lead. wtdemng the gap at every lap, with Burres and Drake going at it handlebar to handlebar; Drake won the battle. Wilson finally got by Burres which left a battle betwccn Burres and Armour with the final lap coming up. Rush was way out front at the finish with Drake on his Skip Eaken, KK Supply for second and another big gap betwccn Wilson. Armour, Burres, McDonald, Jones, Duma, high point central Expert Phil Darcy. Steve Pendergraft, and Randy Waldrop rounded out the fmishers.
