WMRRA hosts '79 season finale By Bruce Scholten Photos by Martha Young KENT, WA, SEPT. 16 The ski season still seems an awfully long way off but the Washington Motorcycle Road Racing Association capped off 32 its 1979 season tpday. Riders might content themselves with touring and trail riding until the snow flies. Perhaps they'll try some flat tracking in Monroe, or motocross at S.I.R. While so doing, they can reflect on this year's fme ten road race calendar. WMRRA's 1979 program was packed with record-threatening racing, panicipation by riders from Canada to California, emergence of new racing talent - male and female, and a lack of serious injuries. Manial leadership insured that things ran on time, (Amtrak should be so lucky). and WMRRA panicipants got more miles per racing dollar than perhaps anywhere else in the U.S.A. As usual, today's first race combined four small-bore GP classes. Bikes of all types find niches here, in 125cc GP Money and Sportsman, 250cc GP Single and Open GP Single. Their common characteristic is that lap times are in the same ball park. Tod Dressel took two heat wins in 125cc GP Sportsman for first overall, but YaIr.ima's Ralph Javins (Motor· cycle Engineering and Ignitions) had only to maintain an upright position and finish bOth heats for the season championship. Javins and his twin cylinder Yamaha took an easy third overall with this in mind. Gordie Vansltike rode his Honda a little harder. Even if he'd fallen. down today, the 125ec GP Money points race was already his, but he took two heat wins. In 250cc GP Single, Dan Zlock took his fully·faired Montessa to first overall for the day, and probably the year. He hit the checlr.ered first in heat one, but must have been as stanled as the rest of us when he followed Dan Bennett to the flag in heat two. Founeen year old Bennett is a flat· tracker of quite some ability and his S.I.R. road race debut caused quite a splash. In the first heat he took his Dickie framed Honda to a second behind Jolin Moffet and Doug. Guthrie. Apparently he'd learned the ropes by heat two - he won it. If he can do this on flat-track tires. we wish him well on slicks next yearl Richard Wascher comes back convincingly. In last year's finale. he crashed his 250cc Honda and broke his back. Today he won Open GP Single going away. In his first S.I.R. race since then, Dick took his new fullyfaired 500 Honda to double wins over Diane Cox's Tf5oo. Wascher runs his own WASCO Racing Frames company (which built Mickey Faye's Houston National-winning frame). Although the motor sponed only a factory bop· up kit, its laid-down S&:W suspension and other tricks made it a road racer's dream. Lap times proved it. This bike could be magic next year. Bill Noble took it to second in 550cc Cafe behind Jerry Whitlow who won the season points chase. And when 250cc GP multi riders voted to let it run as an exhibition, Bruce Lind (already season champ) might have won, but for transmission problems. Brian Suttom now has a championship under his belt. He wrapped up 410cc Production with two wins over hard riding Canadian Chris Hobbs (RD550) and talented rookie Rick Crosby (Yam Datona). Rumor has it that Suttom may be riding a GSIOOO next year. In 750cc Production, Sutton (on an MEl Service Yamaha 750) was close to points leader Rocky Phoenix, so veteran Rocky took his 750·R Honda to back· to· back wins. What a pleasure it would be to watch these two on identical Superbikesl Randy Skiver's Bellevue Suzuki 100 ("just smooth bores and a pipe") wa1lr.ed away with Open Cafe, ahead of Rocky Phoenix' relentless stock 705F. while Scott Moon hung it off to third overall on another stock 750F. Open GP was a cliff·hanger. Chris Michak's Kawasaki ZI went into the fray with a bare three point lead over TZ700 mounted Peter Puhalla of Canada. Mild·mannered Miehak wanted not only the Season Higb Point Champion, but also a clear-cut Open Grand Prix win. In the first heat, Chris came in a solid third. Everett school teacher Jim , Dunn made a rare appearance, one year after be set the S.I.R. track record at I :52.8. He grabbed second behind Puhalli . The second heat was also the last race of the season. Lap times were close to the ret. 1rd, people were yelling and shaking tb ~ir fISts, and one could understand wby the word "glamour" is sometimes related to Grand Prix racing. Gene Brown's Nonon took the
