SEPT. 22·23 The Modified Motorcycle Association, assisted by the International Drag Bike Association and the very capable crew at Fremont Raceway, put on one of the best drag bike programs of the year. Everything went. well from start to finish for the two day event. Saturday opened up the show with a day of qualifying 18 for the Pro categories. and time trials and trophy races for the sportsmen. IDBA sanctioned the event and handled vertification of all records broken. Racing talent was abundant during the weekend, and some of Saturday's top qualifiers included Elmer Trett from Oxford. OH, on a top fuel Harley, coming in at 7.89 with 180.36. Jim Be~rd also ran top fuel on a factory sponsored Yamaha. Jim. ,hailing from La Mirada, CA. I qualified with an 8.06 at 173.41. Pro Comp was controlled by PeeWee Gleason out of Sandy Kosman's shop on a turbo Kawasaki with an 8.49 at 160.14. Pro Stock had a very familiar figure at the top. Terry Henry piloted his Kawasaki to 9.50 at 138.88 to round out the day's top qualifiers in the Pro ranks. Sunday morning came bright and early and most all the racers were ready. Pro Comp semi quickly became a fmal when Gleason couldn't answer the call for a solo pass, due to a broken motor. This left Bob Burdick from Fremont on a Kawasaki and Randy Gyes out of Vancouver, WA on a Harley to do battle. It was local boy Burdick all the way as Gyes missed a shift and had to shut it down. Burdick's time was a 9.58 with 138.24. Pro Stock had Henry drawing a bye run. He made a gentle pass at .10.27 and settled back to watch the war between two other Kawasaki riders. Cedric Johnson of Inglewood, CA lined up with Larry Cook all the way from Milwaukee, OR. When the tree went to green, Cook jumped out first and the hard charging Z·1 kept the lead to win 9.35 at 136.15 to 9.74 at 133.72. This brought Henry and Cook together for the final. Once again two Kawie riders staged and once again Cook jumped ou.t first. But this time the Z·1 of Henry overtook the game but slower machine, 9.54 to 9.49. Super Eliminator had an eight bike field and the first two out were Holden and Jim McClure on a Harley from Williamsburg, VA. The heavily favored Holden's Kaw developed apparent clutch problems halfway down and McClure took the upset win with a 9.27 at 147.29. MichalOWlki pumped his hog out in front of Bonnie Truett's to win 8.87 to 9.72.
