Dixon takes low score at Fort Hood Cowhouse enduro By Margaret Carter KILLEEN, TX, SEPT. 9 Joe Dixon, mounted on a 250 KTM, bagged the overall "A" win at the Fon Hood Din Riders Seventh Annual Cowhouse Enduro with II points. Bobby Pickard, accomplished motocrosser and first time enduro rider, took the 250cc "A" class win with the same score of II points, but blew his chance at the overall by burning the tie-breaker check. Larry Burleson cinched overall "B" with 32 points, four points better than his closest competition, Gary Horton. This year's course was essentially last year's course backwards, which probably accounts for some of t.he flagging being on the left hand side of the trail. The course was the same heart-in-throat experience as all Fort Hood rides; straight up and down with' "no top" hills, rocks as hard as a hooker's heart, and tree limbs even harder. One particularly rasty uphill caused a major bottleneck well into the event and succeeded in putting points on most of the riders. Race chairman, Gary Drain, followed the customary Fort Hood philosophy of putting the riders through several test sections of tight, twisty woods trails, followed with a checkpoint. Due to a manpower shortage, there were virtually no checkpoints designed to catch the rider who gambles and rides hot. Just after the second gas, most of the first 40 numbers did not see a lonely marker pointing toward the last loop. Many were hopelessly lost and quit, .but many more not 50 faint-hearted souls persevered to the bitter end to turn in scores well into three digits. There was a long line at the protest sheet, but FHDR officials voted to let the scores stand, since more than 50 percent of the first 40 numbers finished. Out of a total of 410 entries, there were 224 finishers. Even though race day dawned cool and bright, Kinki Koi still came prepared to the riders' meeting wearing a raincoat and holding an TURBO RACERSI umbrella, a reminder of past Fort Hood events when riders were swept down Cowhouse Creek into Lake Belton. This year, dust was the problem which helped to send several riders to the base hospital. As you sail over the bars and onto the rocks at Fort Hood, you at least are secure in the knowledge that Uncle Sugar's medics will be there soon. The Fort Hood Din Riders also hosted the TSCEC awards banquet on Saturday night preceeding the event. Trophies were presented to the top 20 riders in the state in each of the classes for the 1978-79 season. Overall "A" went to Maico-rider Perry Davis, who was also added to the Texas Enduro Hall of Fame for his second overall "A" year. Maicomounted Andrew Cooksey, took overall "B." Phyllis Hayes won the Women's overall, riding a Suzuki. The top three riders in each of the Men's "B" classes were transferred to the "A" class for the 1979·80 season. A special plaque was presented to Roy Pool, chairman and organizer of the TSCEC for his dedication to the sport of enduro riding. It was a framed cartoon depicting Roy on his Yamahaha looking a lot like Mickey Mouse entitled, "Phantom Mouse of the Southwest." The Trail Riders of Houston's Caney Creek Enduro was voted the Best Enduro of the 1978- 79 season by an overwhelming majority of the circuit riders. • American Turbo-Pak can build your racing engine and blueprint your turbo!
