Fred Merkel (Penero Hon MTI25R) sat dejectedly in his pits after the 125cc GP race, staring at his thrice-seized Honda. His pit-mate and race winner Fred Winters (Bel Ray/NO Honda MTI25R) sat in his chair, tire marks all over the left side of his leathers. "It took me awhile to get used to riding it. I hadn't ridden at all for one week. I got a slow .start on the first lap because Jody (Nicholas) almost made me unload." Nicholas, on a similar Honda, had collided with Winters and fallen on the second turn of the race. Winters then had to struggle to get by Danny Cae (Phil Schilling/Can-Am 125) for the win. 250cc GP saw Mark Homchick (Haynes Manuals TZ250) prevail over AI Collins (Eric Heczko TZ) and Glen Shopier (Farmhouse Rest.lFairway TZ). "That was my first club race win at Sears," remarked Homchick, who had previously won an AMA Novice event at Sears in 1978. Open Box Stock featured the almost-identical Kawasaki KZIOOO Mk II's of Kurt Knollenberg (Grand Prix Cycles) and Whit Blakeslee (Champion Cycles) as the two battled for tbe season points lead. Knollenberg won this round, but the overall victory belonged to Champion Cycle's Mark Shelton, who beat everybody on his box-stock Kawasaki KZ650. In otber action, Gil Martin (TZ750) got by Garden Grove's Harry Klinzmann (Mr. AI's Rest. TZ750) and rode the wheels off his bike to capture Open GP. Chuck Panne (Kaw Z-I) beat the Goodyear man, Kerry Bryant (Kaw Z-I) for the Open SuperStreet win; Dan Batcheller's excellent ride on his Silver Jubilee Triumpb doesn't appear in the results, as John Williams (Barong Kaw KZ650) officially won; and Christine Baur led the opening laps of the Featherweigbt race (Ioocc GP/125-2oocc Prod.) before yielding . to Cbuck Pace. The next race at Sears Point is on October 14. The AFM would like to express their thanks for the help and patience extended by all participants during this race, as internal club bassles resulted in a shortage of turn workers and other officials. The riders, however, seemed almost indifferent to the delays and mixups·. The AFM board has still delayed its decision regarding the "butterfly valve" on Yamaha RD400F's, much to the frustration of many 410cc Box Stock competitors. No AFM officials could be reached for comment. The Northern Chapter is sponsoring a barbeque and general fun day at Marrioll's Great America in Santa Clara on Oct. 6. Call 415/!27-!!2! for details. The Northern Chapter's awards banquet will be held o~ week after the National banquet, January 27, at Francesco's in Oakland, CA.
