Bevi-=- Schlag stacks up' two more at SHR By Roy Harbauer BRENTWOOD, CA, SEPT. 28 Joey Schlag earned a pair of wins This is what "get down" meant at Dixon'. 1>-36 Benef'" MX. DaveWood doubles at D·36 BenefitMX By~elWhite DIXON, CA, SEPT. !l0 Dave Wood was the undisputed winner of all the 250cc and Open Expert class motos at Argyll Park where a capacity crowd of over 30 !l50 riders had turned out for the fund raiser staged by District !l6 to help defray the cost of the awards banquet honoring the top 20 riders in each category. By the end of moto one of the 250cc Expert race, Wood. shadowed by Alan Berluti, had stretched his lead 15 seconds over Dean Wiggins. Although Berluti was down a lap, and thus not a contender for the win, he nevertheless convinced the spectators that he was a competitor worth watching. Berluti began to fulfill that expectation in the first moto of the Open Expert race when he pulled into second behind Wood soon after a less than spectacular seventh place start, only to stumble back to fourth a couple of laps later. By the white flag lap Wood 'had developed an unchallengable lead, but the action remained exciting as Wiggins probed to get by Berluti who was running third and Dave Woodall itched to get past Ross Liberty for eighth. Berluti and Liberty retained their positions. In the second Open moto, Berluti and Eric McKenna tangled and crashed early in the game to put Wood • very hot on the tail of Joey Schlag who had garnered the holeshot and was leading. Midway through the race Wood was in front of Schlag with Wiggins in third and holdit:lg. McKenna and Berluti struggled up from ninth and 10th, improving their positions two spots a lap, to finish third and fourth behind Wood and Schlag. Eighty·four 125cc Novices were split into three divisions. In general, those who started in front, finished in front. Allen Silhanek led Division One all the way; Troy Decoque and Darryl Anthony traded in Division Two; and Jack Barton smoked Division Three so totally as to scarcely seem part of the same race. The interesting action was going on behind those leaders. Notably Jerry Cabral in Division Two who moved steadily yet rapidly from the first turn crash that put him almost last. past nearly every other rider - sometimes three or four at a time - to a fourth place finish in motoone. Although it wasn't quite good enough for a win, another Cabral, Jeff, racing in Division Three was impressive in a charge past 18 riders after his own first turn crash that put him dead last in lap one. In their second motos both Cabral brothers avoided the hex of the last place start with the result that Jerry (Division Two) took third and Jeff (Division Three) crossed the finish a respectable fifth. Two more brothers, Lance and Larry Coleman, split the wins in the 125cc Intermediate motos. The roster for the two motos featured completely different names, with the result that Cory Cantaloupi took the overall with a 5-!I score. Larry and Lance, 8-1 and 1-8 respectively, garnered second and third. Altogether there were !l0 Intermediate riders dicing mercilessly and the results seem rather inconclusive. The feeling was that another moto would yield yet a third set of winners. Northern California race fans can look forward to some pretty exciting weeks ahead while these guys try and sort themselves out. The 125cc Experts raised the tempo still further, but more order prevailed. Mike Preston, still hot from racing the Pro qualifiers in order to join the National Pro Circuit, was first in both motos. In moto one, Scott Rebuck an expected challenger, tangled in tlie first turn and had to settle for an eighth place finish. Moto two saw Pete Langley grab the lead until Preston traded with him during lap two. From then on Preston, Langley and Rebuck, all on Suzuki!, were an inseparable threesome who dazzled the crowd with virtuoso performances on their 125cc guided missiles. Results 125 NOV DIV I: 1.
