David Gerig gets stylish at Saddlebllck. Gomez, Jennings, Wanket victorious atCMC Saddleback MX By Mike Klinger ORANGE, CA, SEPT. 30 With the year winding down quickly, the precious number one plate points are coming very hard. Tony Gomez (Suz), Jeff 22 Jennings (Han) and Pete Wanket (Yam) added ta their point totals by winning their respective classes at the Continental Mota-sports Club's Saddle· backMX. CMC's current number one plate holder in the 125cc class, Tony Gomez, pulled off a I-I tally in the 125cc Pros. Andy Northrup (SoP) grabbed the holeshot in mota one and led for a couple of laps until Gomez tracked his way into the lead. Follow· ing Northrup was Tim Theodore (Suz) and Andy Orescanin (Suz). Gomez was never challenged for the win, Northrup secured second and Theodore was third. In mota two the story was the same. Gomez worked his way into the lead after Rick Atkins (Suz) led for three laps. Theodore and Northrup again diced it out with Northrup taking the flag after racing the remaining three laps without a shift lever. The overall obviously went to Gomez, second to Northrup then Theodore. Jeff Jennings, after taking a couple of weeks off, came out to ride two Kelvin Franks-prepared Hondas. In the 250cc Pros, Jennings grabbed an early lead with Juan Benivedez (C·A) in hot pursuit. Behind the top two were Jim Domann (Yam) and Ben Wald (Mai). On lap two, Benivedez went down and Domann gained second position and was never threatened. Up Tite's Allen Smith (Hus) was having troubles in the middle of the pack but he slowly picked off riders one by one to eventually nail down third place. The mota totals were Jennings, Domann, Smith and Clint Hardick (Han). In mota two, Jennings and Benivedez struggled into the first turn. Jennings put the Franks "Roo" into the lead and never looked back. Domann was right up front along with Smith. The mota ended with the top three positions going to the same riders as in mota one. Jennings received the overall, Domann was second and then Smith and Wald. The Open Pro race was quite a contest. Pete Wanket (Yam) and Jennings (Hon) were no farther apart than one bikelength for the entire first mota. Jennings put the Franks fourstroker into the lead after Wanket had led for three laps. David Gerig (Suz) was a solid third and Lee Ramage (Mai) was fourth. Moto two was the decider. Wanket had to place higher than Jennings for the overall. Jennings got off to a runaway lead but fell lame to shifter problems. Maico-mounted Bill Jewell was then eyeing Wanket for first place, with Chuck Pettigrew (Mai) running third. After all the points were tallied, Wanket went 2-1 for first overall, Jewell (5-2) was second and Jennings (1·6) was third. Results MINI JR: 1. N. Acevedo ISuzl; 2. K. Dietz IYaml; 3. (Suzl; 2. .Jimmy The crowd at DeAnza Cycle Park picked up somewhat last Sunday, undoubtedly owing to the cooler temperatures and better track conditions. The course was almost dustless and stayed fairly moist all day and everyone had a good time racing and enjoying the weather. . This week the 250cc Pro class was again the biggest group of riders. Victorville Suzuki's Yamaha-mounted Andy Jefferson took top honors there after a long close battle with Suzuki of Pomona riders Paul Thede and Matt Tedder as well as Crown Cycle's Greg Zitterkopf (Mai). Tedder got the jump in round one but it was Zitterkopf on top after one lap. Thede was a very close third while Jefferson was battling with Darryl Lumbanis (Mai) for fourth. Lumbattis, however, bailed off in the early part of the race and spent most of his time trying [Q make up ground. The battle for the lead in the meantime had turned into a three way affair with Zitterkopf. Tedder and Thede all going for it. On lap four Tedder repassed Zinerkopf and then Thede did the same and it became a race between the two riders from Pomona. It was exactly halfway through the race that Thede took over and led all the way to the £Jag. Tedder was satisfied with second for a few laps, but he was caught by surprise on the very last la p when Jefferson passed him and took the checkered £Jag. In the next round Zinerkopf grabbed the holeshot with Tedder on his tail and Jefferson in sixth. For lap after lap Ziuerkopf held on to the lead in spite of Tedder's pressure, but on the ninth lap Jefferson passed them both. Thede had come up from the. rear along with Jefferson and he got past Tedder one la plater. but was unable to go any farther before the nag came out. In the overall results it was Jefferson, Thede, Zitterkopf, Tedder, Keith Brajevich (Kaw) and Lumbanis (Mai). The runaway winner in the 250cc Intermediate class was Scott Lantz (Hon).
