crossed Jhe finish line ahead of Schlag and Magley. When the results were posted' Schlag had been disqualified, which moved Magley into second with Starr Needham taking third overall. A freshly watered track made for 'some pretty muddy riding in the lOOcc Sportsmen ranks. Many riders slipped down into it and emerged with a uniform gray-brown hue but Shane Gurnsey kept his Yamaha upright and stayed well out in front to win. The second moto. which was run mostly in . dust, was a repeat for Gurnsey, who took the overall, 1-1-1. . The lead position in the Open Expert race changed hands several times. Joey Schlag (KTM) led off the line only to be replaced by Ross Liberty (Yam) around the first turn who gave it back when he fell climbing up onto the center jump. Next the lead went to Starr Needham and finally to Eric McKenna who retained it for the remainder of the race. In the second mota, Liberty kept the lead for three and' one-half laps before relinquishing to McKenna who finished 1·1·1 with Schlage 2-2-2. But Schlag was disqualified from this race .also, moving Don Wilson into the number two slot. The 10th race combined the IOOcc Minis with the Powder Puffs. Howie Ross established himself in front of Steve Machado and Charles Gedbee until the last lap when Machado went by. In the ensuing bid for the lead, Ross fell, leaving Machado in first and Gedbee second. Young Machado (an Intermediate) took the second mota win for a clear 1-1-1 victory. The Novice lOOcc Mini winner was John Dalton (Suz) I-I-I. In moto one of the Open Intermediates, a clear holeshot was taken by a Yamaha bearing 1233 which wiped· out spectacularly at the foot of spectator hill, giving the lead to a 1179 which, on the following lap, repeated the same wipe-out in the same spot, thus also relinquishing the lead. With that part of the show over, Dean Shulu and Mike Miller, racing wheel to wheel, pulled out a long lead over the others. In the final moments of the mota, Miller pulled in front as Shultz went down in a turn. Shultz was able to regain forward motion in time to claim second past the checkered. In the second mota, ridden in a pall of dust that obscured most of the action from the spectators. Shulu fmished first followed by Rodney Smith second and David Carlson third. which is also how the overalls were awarded. With the track partly watered for the first malO of the 125cc Novice Division I, mud claimed many. The other complaint was still the dust. Positions changed frequently, depending largely on whether one slipped in mud or was blinded by dust, possibly both. Tim Olson managed to stay clean and finally got in front of the dust to take the win followed by Allen Amhanek and then someone riding a lOOcc machine. (Is that legal?) The second moto was dominated by the dust. Overalls went to Allen Smhanek (2-1), Tim Olson (15) and Darryl Anthony (4·3), all on Suzukis. By the time the 125cc Intermediates raced their first moto, the mud could be dealt with, especially by Intermediate riders. Rich Cervantes (Suz) came out in front on the first lap and stayed there followed by Cory Cantaloupi on a Yamaha. Behind them, riders traded positions with the earnestness that characterizes Intermediate racing, but it was Ed Minton who finally took command of third for the You deserve the most for your money!
