Hendricks, 50cc U.S. Champion the last two years, was aboard a factory-replica Kreidler, similar to the ones that swept four of the top five spots in this year's f>Occ World Championship standings. Last year's winner Gil Martin (Yam) and Harry Klinzmann (Yam) were having a terrific dice for the lead on the third lap of the Open GP, but a serious crash by one of the baclunarkers in the high-speed tum nine banking brought out the red flag, halting the race. On lap four, the first lap of the "restart," Martin passed Bruce Hammer (Yam) for the lead. with Klimmann passing Ron Pierce (Suz, I:~I) for third. Dave Emde (Yam) put on a mid-nice charge, moving up to second place briefly. but dropped out with a couple of laps remaining. Martin (1 :29-~O, $11f» set blistering pace, lapping a backmarkers with ease to take the win. Klinzmann ($9f» passed Hammer ($80) to take second, but was nearly overcome in the pits by the combination of heat and smog. Paul McLachlan (Yam, $6f» from New Zealand slipped past Pierce ($50) for fourth a couple of laps from the finish. Pierce had the consolation of winning the Superstreet race earlier. though. Even though they weren't racing for money or points, the 4IOcc Production race was one of the hardest fought battles of the day. After two laps Ed Toomey (Yam, 1:44) led Dick Fuller (Yam) by two bikelengths, with Howard Monise (Yam) and Pat Eagan (Hon) running fender-to-fender right behind them. Fuller's bike was suffering from a persistent misfire in the turns and he dropped about eight lengths back on the fourth lap, but Toomey nearly clipped the wall coming out of the tum nine banking, and Fuller closed the gap back to two lengths, only to drop out two laps later. Monise held off Eagan at the flag for second. Danny Cae (C-A) was the day's big money winner. Prize money was based on the number of bikes in each class. and Cae took home $210 for his victory over the Honda-duo of AFM Number One Fred Winters ($ISO) and journalist Jody Nicholas ($If>f». Mike McAvoy (Clough/Chaffee Kaw) nearly matched Danny's winnings. with a victory in the IOOcc GP ($Sf», but a broken $6 piston ring cost him the $10f> first-place prize money in 200cc GP that eventually went to SCOll Malerbi (Yam). Eddie Lawson returned to racing after his serious crash here at Riverside two months ago by taking second place ($160) in the 2f>Occ GP behind Mark Homchick (Yam, I :~f>, $ISO). Gennady Liubirnsky (Yam), who had briefly led Lawson. took third ($140) ahead .of Mike Baeder (Yam, $I2f». Baeder (Yam, $90) later won the f>OOcc GP ahead of Rudy Galindo ($7f» who ~as aboard an ex-Daytona winning air-cooled ~f>Occ Yamaha. The Sidecar race featured a MazdaRotary powered rig, but an electrical problem kept it from being competitive. Larry Coleman/Mark Bevins (~700 Yam, 1:47, $90) forged past ea:rly leader Roberts/Langford (Kaw) for the lead on the third of six laps. Garnett/Smith (Kaw, $70) got past Roberts ($f>i» for second on the next lap, but couldn't quite catch Coleman. Results 8.M.R. 50cc GRAND PRIX: 1. Jewel HendriclcoIKrel: e-o lllal; 3. DeAnza celebrates $6.8 million OHV grant By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD, CA, SEPT. 2~ Kicking off the weekly motocross event at DeAnza Cycle Park last Sunday was the announcement that the $6,8 million in green stickie money has finally been released for the expansion and improvement of the park. That means that when Governor Brown signed the Robert Presley-endorsed bill last Thursday, Riverside County got the facilities it was promised so long ago and cyclists in the area won a major battle in the losing war against land closure. After the good news it was down to racing as usual and Darryl Lumbattis of Bill'~ Cycle in San Bernardino immediately grabbed the spotlight by jumping into the lead of the 250cc Pro class on his Maico. He led the first moto from flag to flag while Marty Smith (not the former champ; the former wrench) took his Honda to a second over Keith Brajevich (Kaw), Bob Stephenson (Suz) and Chris Tarvin (Hon). In the next round, the track was freshly watered and very slick, but that didn't bother Smith a bit as he pulled the holeshot and then developed a big lead on the first lap. Lumbattis came off the line mid-pack, but by lap two he was in second and reeling in the leader slowly. It wasn't until the lap before the white flag came out that Lumbattis challenged Smith for the lead and took over, securing top money for himself in the process. Chris' brother Clint Tarvin was third in that round for third overall over Chris and Brajevich. The star of the Open Pro class was Jim Lowe and his killer XRf>OO. Lowe took both rounds but the race for second place was much closer. Mark Page (Mai) was runner-up in round one while Eddie Michetti (Mai) and Mike Said (Mai) followed, but in the final moto Page dropped back to fourth with suspension trouble. It was Michetti who nabbed the spot after missing the start and then putting in a fantastic catch-up ride. Overall it looked like Lowe, Michetti, Page, Said and Roy Burton (Suz). Craig Gonnley took the 12f>cc Pros on his Suzuki by winning the fint round and then moving into second on the last lap of round two. Eric Collins led most of the molO, but Rick Stout passed him in the final laps and then Collins quickly faded back to also let Gormley by. Stout's win was accompanied by a first moto third placing which put him in second overall over Collins. and Don Griewe (Suz). The 250cc Intermediates were taken by Chuck Rush (Hus) who took both rounds. Pat Taylor overcame poor starts to take two seconds over Doug Stadtlander (Hon). Mark Hitechew (Bul) and Eric Beingesser (Suz). Results PEE WEE: 1. Allen Brehm IYoml; 2. John Rincon lSuzl. MINI BEG: 1. Erie FrllSOr (Yoml; 2. Joe Rodriquez ISuzt; 3. Erie Rver (Yoml. MINI NOV: 1.
