Indian Dunes MX, ... 28 The first race of the day was the 500cc Pros, and as they rounded the first tum, Greg Robenson Sluffed his 450 Magnum II into the lead. Hal Strauss was right behind, on another Maico, while Dave Haugh, Edwin Arnet and Mark White set up the remainder of tbe top five, all aboard the German Maicos. After the completion of lap two, Robenson and Strauss had put a slight edge over the battle for third among Arnet, Haugh and White. Turner. who went off the track and restaned dead last, only lasted the first couple minutes of the mota' before his bike quit. Frantic work in the pits between races got him back into the second mota, however. Out front. Robertson was in total control the entire way. and the checkers came out with the top five remaining all red Maicos. Robertson. Strauss, Arnet, Haugh and White. Round two saw Strauss and Robenson dueling again. but this time Strauss couldn't stand the intense heat. Greg went on to win by a good margin over Edwin Amet , who came on in the last few laps to ovenake Strauss for second overall. Ron Turner picked up third in the moto. but l!lth overall, which left founh to Mark White's pair of fifths. and fifth overall to Yamaha-mounted Darren Oliver after Haugh fell to II th the second mota. In the 2505. Mike Shoemaker and "Radical Ron" Turner put on two mota· long battles that took them to first and second overall. The second mota win went to Husqvarna's Goat Breker, as did third overall. Turner returned to action in tbe 125cc Pros, and again he won the first moto but failed to repeat in the following. This time, Bobby Kline was tbe menace, and some very hard riding by tbe local kid paid off in the form of an overall win paycheck. In tbe Expen category, Erik Kehoe pve the Yamaha factory some very mteresting things to consider when he went out and demolished the Mini class. then got aboard a 125cc YZ for his very first race on the bigger bike. Erik entered the 125cc Intermediates and took falls in both motos. But that didn't slow him much, as in the first mota the get-off sent him into the first lap dead last, half a lap behind the rear of the pack, and he blasted his way past 15 riders to grab fifth in mota one, then overcome a fall in round two to talr.e tbe mota win over John Langhammer. Second overall was his reward at the end of the day, as well as a good hard look at what the future holds in store for tbe Mini whiz kid. Results !iOO PRO: Grog Rol>or1oon IMaiI; 2. Ed Arne! While Osterday, in his third appearance at Barona, has looked good from his first ride. Hughes started oui about two months ago with dead last finishes nearly every week; but wow what an improvement! The last two races Hughes has' been showing the Barona fans some fast, aggressive racing that was capped off with the two big wins Sunday. The 9 to ll-year-olds provided more top action in the Intermediate classes too, as Frankie Brundage (Suz) took a squealr.er from Yamaha rider Scon Brown in the Stock Division and then lost a wild tie-breaker to "A.J." Canney in the Modifieds. In the 12 to 16-year-old Intermediates, the wins were divided up between KawasalU rider Ami Lemon (Stock) who took a tie-brealr.er over Billy Evans (Suz); and Larry Buder's twO for two blast of the Modifieds over Kawasaki-mounted Taylor Marcell. AfTer the years of the Italjets and the years of the Suzukis, it now looks to be the year of the Yamaha in the Junior Cycles as Scou Brown went two for two over Brad Johnson in both the Stock and the Modifieds with the only real close racing being between these two Yamaha riders. The motorcycle classes produced fine racing Sunday; with Kawasakimounted David McGhee going four for four in the 125cc Expert Stock Modified 'classes and Kawasalti rider Charles Harries continuing to impress as he just ran away with both divisions of the 125cc Intermediates. In the 100cc Novices. MaTty Stone took the Modifieds on his trusty Suzuki. but had his mota win streak stopped at 15 by Donnie Harries (Yam) who parlayed a 1-2 finish for the Stock win over Richard Rose (3-3) and Stone (7I). Once again the Expert ranks have been thinned by "graduations" and injuries, but with the great Imermediates and Juniors waiting in the wings, there is never a shonage of tough competition. So, with five more programs in 1979, and an always great track, come on out and get in on the actionl And finally, congratulations to "Wailin' Woody" Carlson - another Barona Oaks alumni to move into the CMC Pro ranks! Old nmers MX: Carlsbad, 'Jennlngs both hot By Bob Alloy CARLSBAD, CA, SEPT. 16 The temperature was in the 100 0 which might account for the light turnout, but anyway 23 Old Timers showed up. We were given a choice of either eight or 10 laps, and of course what else would be fiuing for pleasure seekers like ourselves? Ten 14ps. of course! Some might say we love misery but there must be other reasons. Bringing on the action was Marshall Jennings in the Masters division. Carlsbad is a real tough tTack, but not according to Marshall as he whizzed around talr.ing the first place honors. Expen Ray Sanchez had everything together and managed to keep things that way for tbe 10 laps and the win in moto one. Earl Nichols (Yam) from San Diego came in second and following Earl was Robert Berdyck. The second mota saw Chuck Woody flying over deep ruts and whoop-dedoos to take first place. Nichols was in there again for another second place. good for the overall win and Berdyck took a repeat third place. Carl Elbert from Long Beach was certainly the man to look at in both Amateur motos. He completely ran away from the rest of the pack and took tbe big trophy along with him. Ray Arnold also was in good form as he took both second place wins. Ray Montoya of the Novice division had things his way after he took tbe lead in mota one and went on to the first place win. Bob Anderson was really in tbere and had the lead for a while but was passed up. However, Bob managed to come in second and following Bob was Dan Harris, our leader, in third place. Moto two saw Anderson out in front but Harris passed him on lap four and couldn't be persuaded to leave. So it was Harris in first place, followed by Anderson in second place and Bob Klau and his Husky talr.ing third. Results MASTERS: 1. Mer8h8lI Jenningo ISuzl. EXPERTS: 1. Eerl Nichola lVoml; 2. Zltterkopf zaps DeAnza By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD, CA, SEPT. 16 After taking more than his fair share of second and third places in past months, Greg Zitterkopf finally put his Crown Cycle Maico on top of {kAnza's 250cc Pro class. In the first moto. however, be spent most of his time in third place behind Riverside Suzuki's Rick Stout and Redlands Suzuki rider Danny Bunt. Stout got off to the top spot right from the stan of the race and it looked like the race would be one of those parade-like affairs with the riders politely spacing themselves out in the following laps. Bunt remained in second ahead of Zitlerkopf, Don Griewe (Kaw), Many Smith (Hon) and Mark Reha (Mai), but on the very last lap -Stout was forced to retire with a locked up machine. Buru went on to win with everyone else following in the same order. In round two, Ziuerkopf led for the first lap, but then Smith managed to take over and build a small lead. But in the heat that has become a major factor in California racing in recent weeks it was a test of endurance more than anything else. After the halfway point, Smith began to fizzle out and Ziuerkopf maintained the same pace
