AUG. 11-12 (Above' Jim Filice (6) took the 250ec Expert c.... at Salinas. (Below) Jeff Haney tangled with Filice and crashed. Mini I1Icer Matt Wilcox at Mabton Dunes. 34 Michigan champ Joe Flower is having no trouble adapting to the California style and won the 250cc Novice over Ricky Smith Steve Manin and Ron Murphy had a great 250cc Junior bash and if you misled the 250cc Expert heats today, you misled half the fun of racing, D- 56 style. Keith Day led the fint, easily showing why he nearly owns this track, while the second was a thriller. Danny Moore and the Cal Cycle Supply special were the first ones into the comer with Jimbo on the outside, Jeff Haney in the middle track and Blair Newell close. Off the fint set of turns, Moore led over Haney and the new CR250R Honda with Filice and crew firmly in tow. Slapping DT-II's hard into the fU'St tum on the next lap stan the commotion as Haney got real close to the Yamaha; enough so that his front wheel hooked a ponion of the Champion frame, ripped out about a dozen spokes, and flipped the rider right over the high side. jeff got bit on the down thrust. The melee shoved Moore wide and Jimbo inherited the lead for an easy win with Moore coming back to take second. Haney walked off the track under his own power with a back row start for the main. If the first run at the green had gone, it would have been Blair Newell on the Lou's Doors special. But even with a seemin~ly good green for a second go to Keith Day, Haney had his hand up and Bun Dinner had to show the red. On the third and final go it was Filice in firm control, never to be headed. Day had little trouble with second spot and teammate Frank Garcia made a rather nice green parade with Mark key in for founh over Moore and Haney. Tim West pulled off the win in the 560cc Novice on the ACK Products Special while Beau Marciel smiled all the way to the 500cc Novice win over Jon Teraji's ancient BSA. John Phillips had it easy in the 500cc Junior as Joe Mitchell couldn't get it all together at once, coming from a far piece to second. Key and Danny Moore shard the 500cc Expen until Key took command with John Pittman in for third. Results PEE-WEE: 1. Jason Cahoon ISuz). eo NOV JR: 1. Bodie Shepard ISuz). 809 NOV: 1. Frri Martin lVaml. eo eo With the end of the racing se~n approaching, riders turned out in full force for the fourth round of the Alaska State Motocross Championship Series at the North Pole Speedway. Going into round four Scott Davis (Suz) of Soldotna held a commanding lead over Jeff Wolverton (Suz) of Anchorage in the 125cc Expert class and Jeff MacDonald (Hon) of Fairbanks in the 250cc Expert class. However, Davis was unable to compete in this round due to injuries receIved in an electrical accident a few days earlier. Wolverton, Davis' major competitor in the 125cc Expen class, was also absent leaving the 125 and 250cc Expert classes up for grabs. The absence of Davis and Wolverton left Eddie Wise (Hon), sponsored by Honda of Anchorage, with the 125cc Expert class victory on the fIrst day of racing. Mike Arnold (Suz) of Anchorage, who missed rounds two and three of the series, followed Wise in for a close second overall for the day. The 250cc Expert class saw Wayne Broste, riding a Yamaha for Anchorage Cycle Sales, take all three moto wins for the overall over AI Ticiniski (Yam) of Canada. Without a doubt, the closest racing of the day came from the 500cc Experts. Jim Stewart of Anchorage launched his KTM into a lead over another Anchorage rider, Chris Patterson (Mai). Stewan held on to the lead until halfway through the last lap when Patterson was able to hook up better driving out of a corner and pass Stewan for the first moto victory. The second moto was a replay of the fIrst with Stewart pulling a holeshot and Patterson in close pursuit. This time Stewart held the lead until a lapped rider forced the KTM rider to back off the throttle' a few feet from the finish line, allowing Patterson to take a photo finish win. Stewart once again holeshot the start and took the lead. However. this time Patterson had a slow stan and by the time he worked his way through traffic into second place Stewart was long gone. Patterson still took the overall win to his 1-1-2 moto finishes. The second day of racing saw Mike Arnold take the 125cc Expert class win over Jeff Sandstrom on his Anchorage Cycle Sales sponsored Yamaha. Previous day's winner Eddie Wise could only manage a third this time. In the 250cc Expert class Canadian Al Ticiniski rode to a solid victory over hometown favorite Jeff MacDonald. With his second place finish on the fIrst day and a win on the second day Ticiniski moved into a strong position to overtake Scott Davis' seemingly invincible oYeFaIl points lead. Tension was thick as the 500cc Experts lined up for the start of their fIrst moto. Neither Patterson or Stewan were willing to settle for.a second place fmish. Of all the classes competing for the State Championship the most furious rivalry was between Pat'tenon and Stewart who were separated by only 125 points going into the second day of racing. When the gate dropped for the fint moto neither Patterson or Stewart had the lead. By the end of the second lap Stewan had taken over with Patte.rson running third. The halfway point found Patterson in second but Stewan had gained too much ground for the Maico rider to catch up. Stewart took the lead on the second moto with Patterson hot on his tail. A third lap crash by Stewart put Patterson into the lead followed closely by another Anchorage rider, Lewis Lamson (C·A). Patterson rode on to the win with Stewart working his way up to third place at the finish. With Stewart's I-!! moto fmishes and Patterson's 2-1 finishes, Stewart would have to win the third moto to take the overall for the day and maintain his slim points advantage over Patterson. As usual, Stewan pulled a holeshot with Patterson right behind. The two racen were never separated by more than two or three seconds the entire moto. Patterson waited for Stewan to make a mistake, but it never came. Stewan finished in fint place with second going to Patterson. This win gave Stewan a 225 point lead over Patterson with the State Championship titles to be decided in Anchorage at the fIfth and final round. Results AUGUST 11 MINI: 1. Rob Wolle 1Suz); 2.
