ENORTHERN OATELlNf ~ Zakarian Bultaco for a great win after another great ride by Pat Seigle, Seigle and the BOSS Yamaha appeared to be ready to break out for the big win, but Pittman made it all happen right at the end with Denny Huff in for third on the Huff Cycle XR Honda. Bill Wages did a fine job of holding off Gerald Spencer in the combined 360-500cc Novice main while Joe Mitchell jetted to the front of the Junior program and held off Mike Hurst and Mike Bird, both on Bird Cycle specials out of Sonora. Ted Davidson did a great number in the closing laps of the 500cc Experts, passing Craig Scroggins on the outside . down the back chute. E Results 100 EX: 1. Aa-on H~IIYaml; 2. KUr1 Chandler (Yaml; 3. Holland continues AME mini series sweep By Judy Greenberg Photo by Bob Greenberg BAKERSFIELD, CA, SEPT. 15 The American Motocross Enterprises California Minicyc1e Championships switched to night racing at Sprockets Park Jorgy returns to Pioneer Arena ST By W.H. Spencer OAKDALE, CA, SEPT. 15 It was a fitting completion to the series of night short track races at the Pioneer Arnea when Alex Jorgensen put together a 32 very fine 250cc Expert win on the Jorgy Can-Am. Along with the retirement of Doug Chandler for two weeks, it made for some interesting changes in the racing. For seven years Chandler has been a very good minibike racer. In just a few short weeks he will be 14 and join the sportsman ranks and start a whole new set of accomplishments, adding to his four years as number one Black Plate, his seven National Championships and his AMA Amateur Athlete of the Year award. What it adds to the program is the chase [or the new number one, whoever it might be. Doug leaves with about a 25-point advantage and will likely stay in the top five. Chandler's retirement was un-highlighted by his getting off the high side of his bike and bruising his forehead_ Doug gave up his trick equipment to little brother Kurt, wbo promptly went out and won the BOcc Expert class over Aaron Hill and Chris Carr, and took a second to Hill in the l00cc Experts. Brian Sansing won the Junior portion of the BOcc class while Benny Scardina won the Novice race over John Ward. Liz Power beat out the boys with relative ease in the 125cc Novice/Junior and was leading the 250cc Novice until she got off in turn four. Chris Roehlk took that win over Mark Butler's 175 IT, while Scott Rose did a good job winning the 250cc Juniors over Randy Glaze's Glaze Electric Yamaha. Three heats of 250cc Experts made for lots of payoffs but the final was a runaway for Alex Jorgensen with Rick Arnaiz coming from behind up to second. Mike Inderbitzen held third over Kim Jorgensen and D-35's John Burnett. John Pittman appears to be able to overcome nearly any problem in the 360cc Expert class, starting way back and pulling out all the stops on his fOT its fourth event of the five race series. Every entrant received oil from Duralube. The winners of the minicycle classes received gift certificates from SCOtt USA and Preston Petty USA. Chris Neal led tbe first gate of Junior Cycle Modified Juniors, but ran into trouble, opening the way for Kyle Lewis to take over with Shane Trittler on his tail. When Trittler bad problems, Doug Fisher moved in and held second to the wire, with Fenton McDaniel finishing third. The second time Neal had conuol all the way. Lewis swapped second with Trittler. coming out on top for the finish. Skip Godinez and Pat Galan fought for the lead of the 8!lcc 12 years and over Stock Intermediates, with Galan getting his wheel in front on the downhilL. Andy Ellis rode strong in third as he closed in on the battling duo. When Galan had trouble in a turn, Godinez took control with Ellis breathing down his neck. Then Ellis went down, putting Todd Campbell and Rudy Dickinsonsecond and third. Ellis and Galan got back in the race to finish fourth and fifth. Campbell took early lead of the second moto, being closely challenged by Godinez, who took over in the back straight. Galan had his work cut out after being plagued with a bad start. He fought his way past Dickinson and Todd Hewatt, and then closed in to presure Campbell until he had second for the finish. Gary Szilagyi returned to racing after a three month layoff, and took back to back wi~ for the 9-11 83cc Modified Intermediates. Szilagyi held a strong lead, the first time out, with Sean Frampton and Buddy Dumo finishing second and third. Eddie Hicks applied pressure to Szilagyi in the second moto, but he was in comrol to the wire, with Hicks, Frampton and Dumo taking the checkered behind him. Lloyd Thomas led tbe first molO of 125cc Juniors, Division I, while Ron Eversole, Scott Hewatt and Adam Ford diced for second, with things settled in Eversole's favor. Byron Polin, Ronnie Lewis and Bobby Kotanjian kept the fifth spot warm, with Lewis breaking away to finish behind Ford. Eversole took the honors for the second gate, with Thomas and Ford behind. Hewatt ran suong in fourth, while Polin kept his wheel in from of Lewis until the white flag lap, when Lewis made his move at the gate. George Holland continued his series sweep in the 83cc Modified, Stock Expert, and 105cc open classes. Doug Gentry held a strong second in the first Modified moto, while Tracy Meeks, Sam Storer and Rick Hemme went at it in third. Meeks ran into trouble, as Hemme and Storer swapped positions, with Storer finishing third. Storer holeshot the second moto, but threw a chain as Holland made a pass. Hemme held second while Gentry passed Meeks for third. The series will concl ude on the International course at Indian Dunes on Sept. 30. The winners of the 1980 Suzukis will be announced, and a "ChallenJl'e of Champions" special event will feature the top Experts in the 83cc and Junior Cycle classes. Results PEE WEE MOD: 1.
