The bota b~g contest Saturday night drew a small but very enthusiastic crowd, with a member of the Dusters earning first place with a time close to fOUT minutes. A member of the ~rt M.C., with more of the fragrant wine on hiS clothes (including, believe it or not, his socks) -------------------- -------- than in his mouth, earned the dubious second place honors, while a member of the ~rt Donltesy took third with more wine on the inside of his mouth than out and truly felt the effects the next morning. Fmal entry count for the race was about 200 as the riden trooped to the start line for a nice. early 8 a.m. start. But, as has been the continuing cue recently, the ambulance. whose crew seems to care very little for the welfare of the riders in this heat, didn't bother to show up for another hour and a ha1fI So the riders scrambled for whatever shade they could find until the new start time was set. The Dusters used a . good challenging trail, but also kept in mind throughout the entire course, the devastating effect the heat can have on the riders. The riders all seemed to agree after the race was over, that it was an excellent summer course. When the banner fmally dropped the heat of the day was beginning to be felt. The bomb run went east, down the valley and through the infamous canyon with its 10·15' drop off. Not far beyond this spot Pete Postel, running in the top 10, got off hard and dislocated his shoulder. He waited for his brother, Bill, to come by and stopped him. Bill's adrenalin was flowing strongly, and he was raring to race, but when he saw that his brother was hurting, he dropped out and brought Pete bad into the pits. It didn't take desert-wise Bruce (Dales Modem Cycle Yamaha) long to take over the lead. Not far behind him were speedsten Greg Thomas (Dick Allen's Yamaha) and Kem Parlt (Torco Oil Husky). Kem's whole family was in the pits this race, giving the already fast Kem extra incentive to do well. Ogilvie led the racing herd into the pits in record time. Greg Thomas, first 250cc Expert, was next with Park in the third spot, second 250cc Expert. John Foster, finally bad in his old fonn, led the 'C' class, fourth over,lI. Number 594 was in the fifth spot• second Heavyweight with Ed Zarp (Heavyweight Expert) ripping at hIS heels. Suzuki· mounted Rich Zajic (250cc Expert) was next with first veteran honors going the IV646 in the Heavyweight class, eighth overall. Bill Saltzman (Heavyweight Expert) was ninth overall followed by wildman Charlie Hammil (second Expert 'C') who, true to tbat nicltname, had done an "almost badward sommersault" for the cameras as he came into the pits. Steady Doug Winchell whose been an Invader for a long, long time was running 11 th overall, fourth Heavyweight. First Old Timer in for gas was Bob Doig, well in front of the next rider in his class. Kelly W JSelDan was first gal, in the 25th overall spot. First and second trail bikes were carrying on a terrific battle as Pete Andelman had his hands full staying ahead of challenger Oren Beck, Jr. First and second novices in for gas were two 250s really riding hard. Number 57lx had only a breath of a lead over Brad Bawn. The checkered was out for all the Beginners and the Novice Trails. First Beginner honors went to Jim Mattox ("C" class) with Brian Vann, also in the "C" class, giving him a real run for the money. Nwnber 557x took tbird overall, first 250cc. Tough Novice Trailbilter Dave Morrison was fourth overall, first Trailbilte. Sandy Love earned first lady .~ ~ .. ~ ..
