with some washouts to check one where the order was Timms, Jones, Park. Schumalter, Zoller and Ogilvie. After check one the order stayed the same until a freeway type fireroad let Zoller get by Schumalter's smaller displaced mount. After the road came some high speed rollers where Park passed Jones and Ogilvie passed Schumaker. Timms made a wrong tum at the top of what the locals call "Sugarloaf Mountain" allowing Park to slip into the lead. Back in the pack, Yamaha's Charlie Hamill moved up to about 10th overall after getting off on the way to the bomb. Mike Smith (Yam) held down frrst C Amateur through check one with second C Amateur Torsten Corum hot in pursuit and third C Amateur, and eventual class winner, Pete Poster (Yam) next. Kelly Kline (Yam) led the Women until mechanical seizure put her out, giving the lead to Kathy Hopkins (Dick Allen's Yamaha) who ended up as first Woman overall. The leaders entered the gas pits in the following order: Parks, Timms, Jones, Zoller, Ogilvie and Ashcraft. Zoller, not being able to fmd his pits, bummed some gas and left the pits having 100t a place to Ogilvie. Ogilvie began malting his move to the front by passing Jones three to four miles into -the second loop. ,Timms began having trouble with the heat and slowed his pace which allowed Ogilvie to catch up and pass. Timms retired at check seven. Jones broke and Zoller 100t a transmission, giving the third overa11 spot to Dan Ashcraft (Up- Park meets gas crtsls at Stump Jumpers Hare 'n Hound By Jeff Robbins TAGLE WASH, CA, SEPT. 9 Husky mounted Torco sponsored Kem Park, almost in sight of the Stump Jumpers Hare and Hound finish, ran oUt of gas and ended his chances for his very first overall victory. Bruce Ogilvie, mounted on his Dale's Modern Cycle Yamaha, was closing on Park and had moved to within 50 seconds of the leader when Park's Husky went dry. Park's gas crisis was academic - if Ogilvie would have been able to pass him within the limited distance to the finish. It was hot, dry and dusty, with no wind, pouibly malting it the hottest day this summer. The only rider ahead of the dust at the start was Bruce lones, a Ridgecrest local, who had the lead going off the downhill at the bomb. Shortly behind Jones came Cory Timms (Hus), Kem Park, Mark BoBer (Hus) , Bruce Ogilvie and Rick Schumalteron a 175 KTM. As the course turned into a wash, just past the bomb, Zoller and Ogilvie decided they were going fast enough in the dust, wben Schumalter, who must have been £lying on instruments, passed them both. The fllSt pan of the course ran up a rocky wash and onto a fast fireroad Kemy Upp. despite 8 whopping lead, didn't back off the throttle at the!omcat. Tile Hus) and fourth overall to Schumaker. About five miles from the finish Park ran out of gas. but Ogilvie stopped about an eighth of a mile later and told a spectator who hustled back to rescue Park, allowing him to finish second overall, first 25Occ. Ashcraft was third over:all, second 25Occ, and Schumaker was fourth overall, first 175cc. Other notable finisher.; were frrst Senior, 175cc, AI Guzman (Suz); first Vet overall, Rick Jackson (Hus); first 175cc Novice, Kurt Pfeiffer. y The entry seemed good this weekend, possibly because of the word that the Check Chase for 1979 was on, making it a strong pouibility that a lot of semi-retired types dusted off their gear and bikes and decided to get into shape for "the big one." , Desert racers are a unique and close family. We take care of each other and in general deeply love each other for what we have between us. Sadly I must report the lOllS of a member of our Family. Eighteen-year.old John Cline, a member of the 100's M.C., died apparently as a result of heat exhaustion. We will truly miss John.
