_._._._._._._._._._. ~ ~ r r Wanket cruised in to finish second and wrap up the overall ahead of Hansen and Lawrence. Tarantino finished fourth. The Open Pro race featured the rider everyone was waiting to see: Magoo Chandler. Chandler's reputation had preceded him, and speculation had him or Yamaha's R-ex Staten winning. It was Pete Wanket, however, who led the start of the first moto with Staten breathing down his neck and Chandler close behind. David Gerig followed in fourth and Steve Rhyan had his Maico up into fifth. Staten soon passed Wanket and grabbed a handful. Staten was really flying around the unusally treacherous course. The park crew had added many jumps and made the existing ones super-radical, and Staten and Chandler were spending a lot of time airborne. Then suddenly, Staten went down hard on the double jumps, and Hansen hit his bike and fell also. As Chandler motored into the lead the ambulance crew helped Staten off the track with a broken rib to end his day and Hansen sat out the rest of the moto. Rhyan slipped by Wanket and began to close on Chandler who was having a lot of problems with a balky gear box. Rhyan closed to within a couple of seconds at the checkered flag as Chandler held on to win. Wanket finished third while Clark Jones put on a spectacular ride to finish fourth on his Yamaha. Chandler wheelied into the lead at the start of the second moto followed by Rhyan and Wanket. Maico rider Lee Ramage finished lap one in fourth, and Jones was running fifth. Chandl"r bailed off in a tight left hander, lost five places, then had his engine load up and dropped back to 14th as Rhyan took over the lead. Rhyan quickly opened up a good-sized lead and looked to have the race in the bag until he highsided over a berm and rung his bell bad enough to DNF. Wanket inherited the lead but caught his foot in a rut and ,twisted his knee "nd pulled off the track. Jones passed Maico rider Mark White and started riding like the devil was after him. Chandler meanwhile was dazzling the spectators with incredible jumps and cross ups while passing riders at will. Chandler w.as catching and gaining on the leaders at about 10 seconds a lap and soon moved into second behind Jones who was struggling with a transmission stuck in second gear. With two laps to go, Jones tried desperately to hold off Magoo who ironically had no second gear, but after nearly endoing off the downhill jump because he couldn't loft the front end with the bike wound out in second Jones settled for the runner-up position. Magoo was the overall winner with second going to Jones, third to White and fourth to Gerig. Results .. OPEN PRO: 1. Danny Chandler IMail; 2. Clartc Jones IVaml; 3. Mark WMe IMail. 250 PRO: 1.
