S The second day of the CMC/ Yamaha Labor Day Classic at Saddleback Park was just as expected; .outstandingl Monday's racing was for a $SOOO Pro purse and DC gift certificates for Sportsmen. In moto one of the Open PnIlI, Ed 26 Arnet (Mai) grabbed the holeshot dOlely foDowed by Clark Jones (Yam). Donnie Hansen (C:A) and Danny "Magoon Chandler. For the fint four laps. the top four riden were no farther apan than one bike's length. but with Amet under pnsure from Jones, the Maico rider spun out and Jones was the new 1cader. Now the real racing started. Hansen and Chandler were neck-to-neck until Cbandler simply banzaied his way into second place. Amet was now founh. and being prelSUred by Eric McKenna (Mai). On lap 11. Chandler moved to within two seconds of Jones who was lapping slower riders. In traffic. Jones ~ boxed in while Chandler lICluinned Into the lead and traveled on for the win. Jones finished second with Hansen third ahead of Amet and McKenna. Amet again put the power to the ground and held the early lead in moto two. but he bailed off before tbe completion of lap one and Hansen took command. Running second was Husky mounted Alan Smith with Chuck Pettigrew (Mai) following. Chandler and Steve Rhyan (Mai) made up tbe top five. Chandler, maneuvering bu way around Pettigrew and Smith into second place, made a run for tbe money. As Magoo gained on Hansen. the CanAm rider pulled off the track with a broken chain and Magoo took the lead. Rhyan got past Smith witb McKenna founh. Overall points went to Chandler with I-I motos, second to Jones 2-6, then McKenna S-4, Rhyan and Bob Marino (Yam). Mark Lawrence (Yam) of LOP led half of the fint 2S0cc Pro moto. Honda's Warren Reid was second off tbe line and Lenny Giger (Kaw), from Las Vegas. was third. As the moto progressed. Lawrence and Reid pulled ahead of Giger slightly wbile Hansen slipped by Ron Turner (Yam) for fourtb and now was up witb tbe leaden. On lap five, Reid showed some finesse and edged into the lead and Hansen pulled up on Lawrence. It took Hansen six more laps to overcome Lawrence but he fmaUy out-powered him in the gully. On the last lap. Turner got past Giger for founh and approached Lawrence but the flag ended his threat. Reid skated to an easy win. Hansen was second. Lawrence third. then came Tuntft and Giger. Moto two found 'Radical' Ron Turner in the early lead but his ailing macbine went lame which left Lawrence in the lead. Giger. Hansen and Reid were aU there for the feast. Hansen took tbe top spot from Lawrence after nudging his way past the Yamaha rider on a taU berm. Reid had to get past Hansen in order to win overall but fint he had to spoil Giger's and Lawrence's hard chargmg acts for the lead. Steadily Reid pulled up on Hansen and eventually he got past; at the nag for the win and the overaU was the red Honda of Warren Reid. Donnie Hansen went 2-2, Lawrence was S-S and Lenny Giger was 4-4. Another LOP rider, UScc Pro Mike Brown (Yam), slammed out of the starting gate and was fint to the checkered nag. Brown ledJim O'Mara (Yam), Tim Lunde (Yam) and Ron Turner (Yam) who were hot on his traw. Jim Holley (Yam) was fifth with Rick Johnson (Yam) plUhing until Johnson bailed and everyone ebe went by. Turner out·luted the battle between himself and Lunde and punued O'Mara for second. Chris Heiaaer (Hon) came from the middle of the pack to cbaUenge Holly and at the checkered Oag he had moved to fourth. Brown won convinci~~ Turner waslleCOnd. O'Mara third Heiaaer and Holley. Rick Johnson pulled off a . ride in moto two when he came the middle of the pack to place second. But it wasn't enongb to overcome the bot Itreak Mike Brown was enjoying. Battling for third place hODOn was O'Mara and HoUey. HoUey got the nod. Brown turned in a perfect day with a 1·1 taUy for the overall win; O'Mara was second, Tuntft third with a 2-S. and HoUey was founh. awe Chandler, Wanket and Brown top Pros at CMC MX By Terry Whytal ORANGE. CA. SEPT. 2 "I was just mad when I feU; I was gonna win or crashJ" recounted Danny "Magoo" Chandler after winning the Open Pro class. In a ride that bad spectaton shaking their heads. Chandler tued ~ incb of the track as he worked his Mateo up from 14th place after falling to take the checkered flag in fust. Tony Wankel managed to keep both wheela of his Yamaha under him as he took the overaU 250cc Pro win despite a fint moto challenge by Suzuki's Scott Gillman and losing the second race to Can-Am rider Donnie Hansen. Yamaha riden Rick Johnaon and Mike Brown had a fierce battle for fint in the opening I2Scc Pro moto with Johnaon coming out on top but Brown charged back in the second race to win with a huge lead and take the top money. Leading the pack at the ltan of the fint 12Scc moto was Johnson followed by Brown and Yamaha rider Tim Lunde. Johnson quickly opened up a five second lead over Brown who was figbti off Lunde wbile Rick Maki moved~ Yamaha into founh. Halfway through the race Brown broke free of Lunde and began to reel in Johnson. MalU dOled on l.unde to battle for third as Brown tried to find . a way past the leader. On the last lap it looked like Brown had the hot line into ftnt. but a lapped rider cut him off and Johnson powered aaa. the finish line with the win. Lunde held on to finish third behind Brown and Chris Hieaaer wicked his Honda past MalU forfounh. Johnson again grabbed the early lead as the IIeCOnd moto c ~ onto the track. MalU held down second and Brown was running third. Brown lOon palled MalU and the Dellt lap kicked his bike into overdrive and blew by Johnson. Curtis Rougb put hit Kawasaki into founh and Lunde moved into fifth wbile battling with Suzuki rider Todd Petersen. Brown continued to pull away out from while Maki set up and passed Johnson. johnson dove back under MalU and the top positions were set. Mike Brown was the overall winner with second going to Johnson, third to Maki and fourth to Lunde. The 2S0cc PI linc:-up featured IlOIDe of CMC's all time top riden and as the pack roosted its way up the ltan bill the cream rOle to the top. Out front was Wanket and Hansen followed by Suzuki rider Jim Tarantino and Gillman. Mark Lawrence had his Yamaha in fifth wbile two other top Yamaha riden Tim Lunde and Rex Staten ,.ere ltuck in traffic. Gillman palled Tarantino but wasn't able to make a move on Wanket as the Moto-X Fox rider was riding like the wind. Wanket was turning the fast lap of the 250cc race as he opened a commanding lead. riding smoothly. Hansen moved by Tarantino and challenged Gillman for second as the race was coming to an end and Gillman held on to finish in the runner-up spot behind Wanket. Hansen wal tbird and Lawrence nipped Tarantino on the last tum for founh. Staten finished sixth and Steve Rhyan put his Maico acnIlII the finish in seventh. Wanket again jumped into the lead early in the second IDOto followed by Gillman and Hansen. Hansen passed Gillman as the Suzuki teamster faded off the pace witJi a broken shock. Lawrence moved into third while the battle for the lead between Wankel and Hansen grew intense. Hansen finally powered bit way into the lead and IDOtOred to the checkered flag.
