Holub and Boston
dominate Lincoln
races
By Dick Ainsworth
liNCOLN, NE,JULY28
John Holub had a super night on
the three-eighths mile flat track;
he won the Coors Beer trophy
dash, 250cc, 500cc and Open
olass finals. Mike Boston also swept the
aGtion in the Stadiumcross Expert
classes by winning both the 125cc and
250cc goes. Both tracks were in
excellent shape and the' motocross
rider turnout Was exceptionally high
due to all the eastern Nebraska
motocross tracks being closed down by
a lawsuit.
Bob Ramer and Holub put on a
show in the 500cc heat as they
swapped it back and forth all the way
to the end with Ramer barely winning.
Holub then chased Mike Parker in the
Coors Beer trophy dash for every lap
except the one that counts the most.
~ark Decker took a big lead in the
Mi.ni final over Dave Erickson and
Paul Bannister. John Nichols came out
of nowhere to challenge Decker for the
lead and it went down to the wire with
Decker winning-by two bike lengths.
Parker simply blew the 125's away in
his heat and the final. Holub was
gone like a rocket in the 250cc final
aboard a Stan's Speedway Sales
Yamaha. Rob Goodwin and Ramer
fought over second until Steve Lortz
moved past Goodwin. Meanwhile.
Ramer began to close on Holub but
never caught him. Goodwin got by
. Lortz but lost it again on the next lap.
Ramer led Holub in the 500cc final
until Holub got by on the back chute,
but Kent Bickers hit the wall in tum
four and the red flag came out. On the
restart Ramer and Holub swapped
and re-swapped the lead back and
forth with Holub barely winning.
Holub took the lead in the Open final
over John Rife. On lap three Ramer
got by Rife and began to close on
Holub but time ran out and Holub
claimed his third feature of the night.
In the 125cc Hobby class it was a
battle between Rick Germar and
Unrud in both the heat and the final:
Rick was quickest in the turns while
im had the steam on the straights.
But Rick got tangled in jim's rear
wheel and fell, letting Curt Meyers
into second.
The Open Hobby class was a runaway for Rob Goodwin in both the
heat and the final; he and his 500
Yamaha thumper ran away to win by
large margins.
In the 125cc Stadiumcross Mike
Boston took the' lead over Don Lackey,
Greg Baade and Mike Unruh. By lap
four Mark Urbach had moved from
eighth to fourth and got by Baade on
the last lap for third. Boston won big.
Boston also took a big lead in the
250cc Stadiumcross final over Don
Raskey. Next lap Mark Urbach got by
tewart Alley for third and on lap four
he took over second. But nobody was
oing to catch Boston tonight.
Matt Morris led the Open Stadiumross all the way with Rich Chandler
taying in second for the duration.

Burke and Holem
star at Tri-County
Fair stadium MX
By Dick Ainsworth
HERRINGTON, KS, JULY 27
An excellent turnout of riders
provided an action-packed show
for the local fans, most of whom
had never seen a motocross be·
fore. at the Tri·County Fair. The Flint
Hills Cycle Club laid out the track and
handled the races for the fair board
people.
The Experts were out to stop Barry
Holem and "Smokin' Joe" Burke. but
they didn't. Burke won the first 125cc
Expe~t moto over Holem. Jeff
Schumacher and Ward Wiebe. Holem
won the last mota over Schumacher.
Tim Schultz and Burke.
The 250cc Expert race found Joe
Burke sitting by himself on the back
row behind the starting line. This race
was pre-entry only and Burke had
gotten an entry in for the 125cc but
not the 250cc. There was an opening
in the class so they let him race but he
had to start behind the pack_ Burke
ended up chasing winner Holem,
Brian Layton and Schultz in the first
moto. Gary Maier, who took a 19th in
the first moro, won the last maIO over
Burke. Schumacher and Schultz.
Burke got the overall win with a 4·2
performance while Schumacher and
Holen tried to occupy the same part
of the track at the same time with
Schumacher ending up in the snow
fence.
Paul Exposito shut out local
hotshots Kevin Cook and Frank Royce
to win the 125cc Junior while John
Christopher had a 5-1 day but had to
take a second to local flyer Richard
Crawford in the 250ccJunior.

Boston double
winner at final
Flint Hills MX
By Dick Ainsworth
DELAVAN, KS, AUG. 5
The Delavan track was again in
excellent condition, despite drying temperatures in the upper
90's. This was the last motocross
of the year by the Flint Hills Cycle
Club and they did another fine job.
Mike Boston journeyed down from
the Crete area of Lincoln, Nebraska to
win the 125cc and 250cc Expert
classes.
Tim Schultz led the first 125cc
Expert mota over Boston but then had
to chase Boston for six laps until he
made a slick inside move in the whoops
and regained the lead to win. Schultz
led the last mota until he blew it in the
north end, got up and finished third.
This gave Boston the overall with a 2-1
compared to Schultz's 1-3.
Schultz led Boston in the 250cc
Expert and it was cat-'n-mouse for
seven laps with Boston right on
Schultz's rear fender. Schultz finally
shook free and opened it up only to
have Boston close to within three
lengths at the end. Steve Hendricks
came from last to third. Schultz led
Boston in the last moto, too, but just
like a replay of the 125's, he slid out
and let Boston have the overall with a
2·1 to his 1-2. Twice in one day is
enough to make you pull your hair outl
•Bud Lee won both of his Open
Expert motos and then sat back,
relaxed. and watched his son Mike.
who is home from a four year hitch in
the Marines, take a second overall in
the Open Junior behind Mike
Scheppke.
Don Sleezer led the first 125cc
Junior moto but David Kleusch took
the lead at the half lap mark. Al
Barranco and Frank Royce both got
by Sleezer but Sleezer wasn't having
any in the last mota and held on to
second as Kleusch won again.
