ENORTHERN DATEUNE ~ E "Magoo," Migliore, Archuleta end Bohm tip the top of Tooele Suzuki Mtn. Sun shines on Burgett at Mt. View By Jan Newman SANDY, OR, JUI--Y 29 Just about everyone up here who has ever heard of Rick Burgett turned out for Mt. View Cycle Park's "Welcome Home Burgett" 34 day, which turned out to ~ like a step into the past with Chuck Sun also on hand. The duo aptly provided one of those white knuckle chases we could watch on just about any Sunday a few years back. Only one, though, because Rick pulled a bail off in the second 250cc moto and retired for the day. The 250's were the first of the Pro classes to run. Half the pack went the wrong way on the scratch. After regrouping and being chastised for missing the riders' meeting where such things are discussed, they were off again. Burgett's Yamaha led the pack all the way to the flag. Brian Hall (Suz) circulated the first lap in second place but mechanical problems dropped him back to an eventual DNF. Meanwhile, Clay Azar (Yam) and Randy Wing (Ka~) moved up to lay permanent claim to second and third. Round two was led by Troy Folck (Hon), Tim Michletseh (Yam) and Jeff Cropper (Suz). Back in the pack, Azar (who had already added up what he'd take home if he won) was being pushed toward the front by Burgett. Michlitseh took the lead in the second loop but by the fourth lap Azar was out front with Burgett trying to pick his pocket. The tussle went on for three laps before Burgett crashed. Azar's money was secure. Wing's !l-4 finishes were good enough for second and Michlitseh was 6-2 for third. Yamaha's Burgett and Husqvarna's Sun locked horns in the Open class for the long awaited show. There's been a lot of water under the bridge for these two since they were the "Dynamic Duo" of local racing. but some things never change. They stiD display a complete contrast in style. Chuck sits as light and gracefully on a bike as a ballet dancer while Rick applies the brute strength of a steer wrestler; yet they both arrive at the same end at roughly the same speed - 14$/. Chuck got the holeshot while Rick (who must have missed the message in the 250cc class)· went the wrong way. Chuck pulled out a good lead while Rick sorted himself through the entire pack. The moment finally arrived when he was at Chuck's heels where he poked and prodded for an opening lap after lap. The opening finally came in the final lap when Rick took the lead but Chuck found his own spot and wound up in front at the flag. Chuck went on to win the next one while Mark Hambelton and Mark Kim rode Maicos to second and third. Tim Michlitsch (Yam) led all the way in both 125cc Pro motos. Troy Folck (Hon) shadowed him in the first moto and worked his way by Chris Seines (Suz) and Mike McCormick (Yam) to finish second in the final race. Results PEE WEE: 1. Henry Corbin lSuzl; 2. Pros go for the gold at Bonneville Raceway By Maxie Abernethy SALT LAKE CITY, UT, AUG. 4 Motocross wheels in Salt Lake City were sent spinning when Bob Ipson created a $5,000 pot prize for a fantastic Pro race featuring the appearances of Danny "Magoo" Chandler and Carlos Serrano. He opened the gates for some high-ballin' motocross action at Bonneville Raceway Park where a crowd of over 2,100 spectators roared their approval as racers from Utah, California, Washington, Idaho, Texas, Arizona, Wyoming and Nevada competed for the top bucks. The melee began with a Mini massacre led by Randy Lindsey (Yam), Jeff Flowers (Yam) and Doug Wing (Yam) until a flash of not so mellow yellow swept by and Steve Lied~rg (Suz) rode into the top spot. Liedberg rolled up the race, tied it up with a blue ribbon ride, then zonked the checks with the package,' whill; Lindsey shut out Wing and Gordon Brown (Suz). The second moto became a game of cat and mice when Brown roared into the top spot. with Lindsey and Flowers trailing in his knobbie-rut. Liedberg serenely scoped-out the action uDlil they reached the first comer, then geared his mount into a full throllie allack. Lindsey rolled into the lead while Wing shook loose from the middle pack to put the whammy on Brown. 11 looked like Lindsey was going to take it all the way as the last lap flag fluttered, but Liedberg dialed in on Lindsey and took the checkered for the trophy. Lindsey came through for second and Wing f1ullered away with third. All Mini classes were combined; Liedberg got a Mini Expert first; Wing took the high stakes for the Intermediate class; Lindsey, Flowers and Brown were the top three in the MiniJunior bunch. After numerous quali'fiers, the 125cc Pro class readied themselves for the main events and all thoughts were ceDlered on the big bucks. "Dangerous Dan" Lechtenberg (Yam) drew the holeshot and began a tedious moto drive while Stan "WFO" Wynhof (Suz) shut down second with Mike O'Driscoll (Suz) third. O'Driscoll took a trip to endo-land, and Eldon Copier (Yam) snagged his spot and went throttling after Wynhof. Carlos Serrano, on a Yamaha from Cyclewise Yamaha, slipped in for a dice, took out Wy~hof, then kt up Copier as his next victim. Copier had begun to nibble on Lechtenberg's knobbie when Serrano bit the dust. Serrano put his act back together and berserked his mount into third. The climax grew into a last lap Lechtenberg lead, but he spilled the beans in a corner crunch and Serrano grabbed the victory. Wynhof went for second and Lechtenberg captured third. The second moto got down and dirty as they bombarded the turf. Copier lost it on the first lap and gave up his fourth place, O'DriscoU hassled Wynhof for second, and Serrano rode in the ace spo!. The leaders separated for a breather; Serrano went down and hell broke loose. O'Driscoll jerked out the stops and cut into the lead with amazing dexterity while Serrano broke aU speedy remount records and roosted Wynhof with his second place launch. A do-or-die bailIe took place as O'Driscoll and Serrano elbowed a double lead, tromping the track together while the crowd roared their approval. Meanwhile, Copier was crushing anything that got in his way as he moved up through the pack. Most of the allention was centered on the O'Driscoil-Serrano skirmish as they flew side· by-side over the Tooele Suzuki jump and headed for some dangerous curves. O'Driscoll weDl high, Serrano got a slight edge as he went low, then his rear tire stretched out a kink, hit O'Driscoll, and sent him over the berm. Serrano gathered up the win, Wynhof claimed second and Kaiser reeled in third. Carlos Serrano (Mai) went straight for the money as the first moto got underway for the 250cc Pro class. Jerry Wright (Hon) popped off second while O'DriscoU searched for a passing lane. Mike Lambourne (Yam) closed the door on Danny "Magoo" Chandler .(Mai) and position changes were put on hold. O'Driscoll found an opening, fired into second, got out of shape and fell off. Wright zoomed up to regain the runner-up slot. but Chandler took the place and Wright went for a wrong-way ride. Lambourne's third place was suddenly shattered by Scou Kinner (Yam) and he dropped back to dice it out with Dale Bohm (Hon). Chandler rear-ended Serrano in the tight comers. gassed the straights and eventuaUy gained a very slim lead. Serrano cut the yards on Chandler on the last lap and they pegged the straights together. Chandler went a lillie too wide on a sharp lefty and flew into the flags, then the checks emerged and Serrano gassed in for the high stakes. Chandler rushed away with second and Kinner finished third. Holeshot heaven greeted o'DriscoII when the 250cc Pros began their trek for the big bucks in the second round. Dan Lechtenberg (Yam) and Wright centered in on second, but Chandler swallowed them both and headed for O'Driscoll. O'DriscoU caged ChandleF, only to watch him escape with a getaway leap over the Plaza Cycle jump and then fall off in a switch-back. O'Driscoll again filled the front position, Wright held second, Chandler fired up third and Serrano finally shook loose from a pack tangle to begin his climb to the top. Chandler momemarily latched onto the runnerup slot, but seconds later, he had another falling-out and dropped baa to founh. A skirmish erupted between O'Driscoll and Wright for first. then Chandler and Serrano followed suit. Chandler rode away with the big bucks, Serrano shot through for second and Wright got third. The Open Pro class impatiently feathered their throllies and waited for the gate to begin its descent. Jay Migliore (Suz) found the front-rut first, but he had some ferocious tigers, Carlos Serrano (Mai), Mark Brooks (Mai) and Danny Chandler (Mai), to hold back. Serrano took advantage of a slight opening and snatched the lead and Chandler too whipped by Migliore. Meanwhile, another Maico charger, Dave Meacham, was on his way to join the fun and Migliore found himself surrounded. Chandler took his one-way ride to the wire, Serrano brought home second place and Meacham held the hammer down for third. Maicos ruled the second moto as Brooks notched the holeshot and went into the lead with Meacham second and Serrano third. A tussel between Meacham and Serrano put Serrano in ... then Out of second spot. Serrano, Chandler and Dale Bohm (Mai) got into a three-way struggle and when the dust cleared. Bohm shook the grit off for third. Bohms' mount spullered and slowed with a fouled plug. leaving the door wide open for Chandler and Migliore. Migliore nabbed the vacant spot and Shane Burrows (Yam) buzzed into the action. Brooks ended it all with a rust. Meacham corralled second and Migliore whipped up third, but the overall tally gave Meacham the high score. Brooks dropped a notch for second and Migliore ended up third. • Results MINI EX: 1.
