They must have 8 great lighting system up there. Cunningham clicks at ZAP/CMC night MX By Paul Castoro FREMONT, CA, AUG. 1 With temperatures soaring into the high 80's, crowds flocked to ZAP's Wednesday night motocross to catch some of the finest racing action ever seen at the b~y side circuit. Multi class campaigners Jerome Heiburger and Jim Cunningham both picked up hefty Pro paybacks; Heiburger earned 250cc and Open class honors while young Cunningham topped the 125cc Pro division. Jim Cunningham from Pebble Beach led the large contingent of 250cc Pros around the revised Fremont course with Michael Preston and Jeff Jacobsen ripping at the .rea,r end of his Cal-Cycle Honda. It dldn t we long for Preston (Suz) to claim the premier position as he jammed un~er Cunningham in the tough mid· section. After getting a lazy stan, Jerome Heiburger aboard the Olympic Cycles Can-Am aced his way through the pack moving into third, pushing Grand Prix Cycle's, Jeff Jacobsen into founh. Dave McRae (Hon) and Trick Cycle's, Bruce Manzoni (Mai) were having a hellacious battle for fifth after being involved in a first corner melee with Husky's Charley Halcomb. Up front, Preston was showing what he had learned from his tour on the Nati'onal circuit and he held off Cunningham and Heiburger to pick up the moto win, The final saw Cunningham, Preston and Heiburger engage in a see-saw battle for the gold. Cunningham was maintaining a scant lead until berm master Heiburger bumped both Preston ·and Cunningham out of his way to score another forceful victory. Final scores showed Heiburger (3-1), Cunningham (2-2) and Preston (1-3). The sparse line up of small bore 125cc professionals was strictly a Jim Cunningham show. The Yamaha speedster held off repeated challenges of Suzuki rider Mike Preston and Palo Alto Yamaha's Shawn McConn. Cunningham hooked up well to the tacky Fremont terrain, pulling off a climactic double moto win, thus assuring himself both cash and CMC points. Gary Hutto (Bike World Kaw) turned a few heads as the 125cc Intermediate racer maintained a hot pace with the Pro boys in the combined race. Preston picked up second place money while McConn placed third overall. In Open class action Heiburger, riding his usual Suzuki RM, easily bested the line up of Open Pros. The San Jose speedster held off Maico Master Phil Douglas and Santa Cruz's Tim Alarcon (Mai) during both motos. IIi Sportsman action Brian OttO, riding out of Champion Yamaha In San Jose is indeed'the hottest rider to hit Fremont this year as the Open Novice campaigner continued his string of victories (four) on his 400 YZF. The confident Otto held off Mark Terry (Suz) to score a convincing wire to wire win in the opening molO while catching and passing Jim Owens (Mai) to grab the double moto victory. Open scores were: Brian Otto (I-I), Jim Owens (4-2) and Kirk Carter (3-5). Art "The Dart" Klingbeil held off Jensen Cycles, Allen Sithanesk (RM80) to score a double moto victory during the 100 Intermediate segment. Novice mOlO-action saw Don Tarp claiming a I-I victory, holding off Jimmy Heiburger and Women's National hopeful, Yvette Husted riding aboard herJensen Cycles Suzuki. . Back into the south bay moto scene, after a brief retirement, Steve Scoffone of Santa Cruz showed his old form as the Yamaha rider held off Mark Howard (Yam) and Pete Hazel (Mai) lo copp the 250 Intermediate title.
