Mike Mayes _
third best in 750cc Production action at S.I.R.
Carr and Chandler
lead minis to
Amateur National
ByW. H. Spencer
Lom, CA,JULY 28
Qualifications for the AMA National Amateur Scrambles finals
kept the District 36 area busy
this weekend with riders tripping
in from various parts of the west coast.
Minibikes took over the first night of
racing in quest of the chance to go for
a National title. A sp;uxo but enthusi·
astic crowd of riders and their families
made for an enjoyable ev~ng with
Chris Carr and Doug Chandler high·
lighting the action with their
stupendous riding talent_
The Lodi Cycle Bowl is a natural
place for the Amateur qualifier events
and the resulting transfers to the finals
should make for a great event at Ascot
Park on Aug. 25-26.
Leading out the evening's bill of
fare was Frank Moms winning the O·
51cc class on an RM 50 over Bryon
Knight on an Italjet and Tom Knight
on a Honda 50.
Steve Mitchell won the stock up to
85cc class on a XX·80 over John West,
with Mike Macedo also qualifying for
the run offs on an RM 80. Antone
Mellow waved at the crowd of 0·65cc
racers in a runaway win over Harold
Gepford and Matt Dequasie while
Doug chandler did some fine passing
in tbe 80cc Modified class to beat out
Chris Carr and Danny Moore.

,36,
Doug, the AMA Amateur National
Athlete of the Year, is about to turn
Sportsman in the DiStrict. but because
of the National rules, he was running
the first of four classes as was Carr.
Both are defending National champs
and will be 'out to do at least as well, if
not better in both short track and
scrambles events.
Doug rode the Kawasaki of Salinas
scooter around Carr in one of Chris'
rare moments of mistake and the Jorgy
RM 80 Suzuki kept up a tough pace to
hold a narrow second over Danny
Moore on another KX-80.
In the stock 80cc class for 7-11 year
. olds, current District points leader
Aaron Hill took the win over Kurt
Chandler. Todd Beecher joined the
NO sparked crowd and also qualified
his Yamaha of Salinas mount.
Chris Carr was allowing for no more
mistakes in the Schoolboy, 100cc class.
He held off a very determined
Chandler for the length while Vance
Sherfield took the last qualification
spot. Aaron Hill repeated in the 80cc
Modifed for 7-11 year olds along with
Kurt and Todd, while Vance Sherfield
took the 125cc 12·15 year old set over
Danny Moore and Gary Coit.
, AU the ,kids are Jook.ing forward ~o a
great weekend of TT racing at Ascot
and they're really getting pumped for
a chance at the National Amateur
Championship.
