Spencer Lom, CA,JULY 28 Qualifications for the AMA National Amateur Scrambles finals kept the District 36 area busy this weekend with riders tripping in from various parts of the west coast. Minibikes took over the first night of racing in quest of the chance to go for a National title. A sp;uxo but enthusi· astic crowd of riders and their families made for an enjoyable ev~ng with Chris Carr and Doug Chandler high· lighting the action with their stupendous riding talent_ The Lodi Cycle Bowl is a natural place for the Amateur qualifier events and the resulting transfers to the finals should make for a great event at Ascot Park on Aug. 25-26. Leading out the evening's bill of fare was Frank Moms winning the O· 51cc class on an RM 50 over Bryon Knight on an Italjet and Tom Knight on a Honda 50. Steve Mitchell won the stock up to 85cc class on a XX·80 over John West, with Mike Macedo also qualifying for the run offs on an RM 80. Antone Mellow waved at the crowd of 0·65cc racers in a runaway win over Harold Gepford and Matt Dequasie while Doug chandler did some fine passing in tbe 80cc Modified class to beat out Chris Carr and Danny Moore. • .. ,36, Doug, the AMA Amateur National Athlete of the Year, is about to turn Sportsman in the DiStrict. but because of the National rules, he was running the first of four classes as was Carr. Both are defending National champs and will be 'out to do at least as well, if not better in both short track and scrambles events. Doug rode the Kawasaki of Salinas scooter around Carr in one of Chris' rare moments of mistake and the Jorgy RM 80 Suzuki kept up a tough pace to hold a narrow second over Danny Moore on another KX-80. In the stock 80cc class for 7-11 year . olds, current District points leader Aaron Hill took the win over Kurt Chandler. Todd Beecher joined the NO sparked crowd and also qualified his Yamaha of Salinas mount. Chris Carr was allowing for no more mistakes in the Schoolboy, 100cc class. He held off a very determined Chandler for the length while Vance Sherfield took the last qualification spot. Aaron Hill repeated in the 80cc Modifed for 7-11 year olds along with Kurt and Todd, while Vance Sherfield took the 125cc 12·15 year old set over Danny Moore and Gary Coit. , AU the ,kids are Jook.ing forward ~o a great weekend of TT racing at Ascot and they're really getting pumped for a chance at the National Amateur Championship.
