Vet_en G-V Jones and his Ammex at Ascot', CMC motocross show. Two for Lunde at CMCAscotMX • By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, AUG. I Motocross racing at Ascot Pa'rk is going red hot and it is easy to understand just why this event has been going for 10 years. Tim 28 Lunde is just one of the fine racers who has raced for about that long and tonight he showed what a Ititle experience can ao as he won both the 125 and 250cc Pro races. In the I25cc Pro class a few people had their bad breaks and Todd Peterson was one. Todd was going good in the first moto but then he somehow sideswiped a trash can which was located on a straight. Bob Kline was on the throttle and shot out ahead and led straight to the checkered flag. Ross Maeda followed in second in front of Lunde. The second moto was a thrilling race as both Lunde and Kline diced side by side. Then they came to a small corner right after the crashwall, collided and fell hard. Lunde got on the gas again and although he was passed by Glenn Page he caught up and took first place. Kline didn't have the same comeback and finished fourth behind Maeda and Page. When Stu Peters handed out the Pro payback, Lunde got the lion's share over Maeda, Bob Kline, Page and Mark Denning. The 250 and 500cc Pro classes were down on riders and they combined the classes. Tim Lunde rode his 250 Yamaha and he battled against Shane McDonald's KTM 400. Lunde smoked him in the first moto but found things more difficult in the final round. McDonald led by a few bikelengths and Tim trailed. Then they were pressing one another hard and Tim went to the inside on the corner before the TT jump. He slid around Shane but somehow he stalled his engine. So McDonald held the lead to the finish. McDonald won the 500cc Pro class overall while Lunde aced out Gregg Waldrup in the 250cc race. Ron Olson is becoming the star in the 250cc Junior class. This is always a full-house race. Olson darted out ahead on his Yamaha in the first moto and breezed through the race in front of Dan Arellano and Gilbert Leos. In the second moto Olson was in the lead but it appeared that his engine was developing problems and he was passed by Leos and Arellano. Then Arellano fell on a corner so Olson made it through the finish in second. The 250cc Junior first place trophy fell into OlsOn's hands for his 1-2 finish. Those who fell into the next places were Leos, Arellano, Dave Whatley and Art Gergjes. Results MINI JR DIV 1: 1. John McLellan IYaml; 2. Poter LC>nClIl'evich lVoml; 3. John S1a_ ISuzI. "'* Wankets storm CltC Saddleback MX By Mike Klinger ORANGE, CA, AUG. 5 Moto-X Fox-sponsored Tony and Pete Wanket arrived early at Steve Rhyan 1141 leads here, but Tony Wenket 1481 won at CMC 5addleback. Saddleback Park but left quicltly with two Professional class wins and most of the bucks at the Continental Moto-sporlS Club event. Yamaha support rider RickJohnson showed the other 125cc Pros who has the power and who does not. In moto one, Johnson crested the Saddleback hill start with the lead and no one could catch him. As Johnson flawlessly opened a big lead, the battle for second was hot. Don Fuller (Suz), Tim Lunde (Yam), Rick Maki (Yam) and Bob Sullivan (Suz) were the candidates for the runner-up. For the entire 14 laps, these four rockets were no farther than one bikelength apart. After the dust had cleared, Johnson was first, Maki battled Lunde and picked up second, Sullivan was fourth and Todd Peterson (Suz) was fifth. Moto two had some controversy. Johnson again got the holeshot and was gone! Lunde was running a stable second with Maki gaining on Lunde on every lap. On the last lap the battle between number one and number 18 was so heated that Malr.i accidentally cut the course and was penalized one lap for doing so. This enabled Peterson to gain third overall rather than Maki. So, Johnson scored a I-I for first overall, Lunde was second, then Peterson and Sullivan. Malr.i finished eighth. Tony Wanket (Yam) picked up two fine wins in the 250cc Pros. In both motos, Wanket pulled the rest of the field. Tim Lunde (Yam) chased Wanket to no avail and tallied a 2-2 for second overall. Yamaha-mounted Jerry Raymer turned in an excellent ride, 4-g, to place third overall. Chris Chaffee (Yam) was fourth. In the Open Pros, Steve Rhyan (Mai) and Pete Wanket (Yam) were the show for the day. In moto one, Wanket got the lead with Rick Maki' (Yam) and Rhyan dose behind. It took little time for Rhyan to take Maki and pursue Wanket. On lap three, Maki spun out on Webco hill and settled for the middle of the pack. On lap seven, Rhyan snuck inside of Wanket and never looked back. Andy Jefferson (Suz) was running third with Chuck Pettigrew (Mai) and Alan Smith (Hus) hustling until the checkered. At the flag, the finishing positions were: Rhyan, Wanket, Jefferson, Pettigrew and Smith. Wanket got his revenge in moto two. The quarrel was still as heated between Wanket and Rhyan but Wanket won the moto which gave him first overall. Rhyan with a 1-2 fmish was second. Jefferson had to settle for fifth behind Chaffee and Smith, but a g-5 score was good enough for third overall. Results MINI JR: 1. B. E_her ISuz): 2. J. Mclellan IYoml: 3. R. Rundle ISuz). HardIck hot In Speedway J.J.7's NDSerlesMX By Rod Eschenburg Photo by Photocross CHULA VISTA, CA, AUG. I A balmy evening and torrid racing is the best way to describe last Wednesday night's ND Spark Plug 1979 Series motocross racing at Speedway 117. Three classes saw new point leaders emerge and five classes saw riders score big-point wins to move way up in the standings. In the 250cc Pros Clint Hardick scored in easy wins over Mike Stearns, and a crashing early point leader Kirk Grissom, to move into the point lead
