WASHOUGAL, WA,JULY!2
The best racing conditions this
year greeted competitors for the
fifth round of the Gresham
Toyota MX Series at Washougal.
34
With the track watered heavily under
an ova-cast sky, racing conditions were
guaranteed perfect. Riders who
walRel the track were pumped, and
with the addition of the Pro- Trac
Racing Team, thinp turned to magic.
~ Proa were tbe first hot clau off
the /iDe and Clay AuT, newly appointed LOP rider, got the hoIeshot. Right
on hit knobby was Mark Hambleton
on a Maico for Iron Horse. Allen
Herluti (Mai) riding for Pro-Trac kept
things very honest as he began his
charge on a new, to him, track.
Hambleton dialed it to pass Aur by
lap three only to 10lIe it back to AuI' by
lap four. Their duel was the best this
year for the Open class, with Chris
Washburn, Hillsboro Suzuki, working
is way up to the leaden after a middleof-the-pack start. Tim MichletlCh
(LOP) had a third place start going
and was working his way up, as only he
does, when he was mOllt unceremoni.ousIy spit off by the bike when he came
down on a bump. Tim had his bell
rung quite loud and retired from the
moto.
Azar ran the 20-minutes to the wire
and caught the fl~g for the win.
Hambleton followed for second while
Berluti Maicoed his way for third.
Chris Washburn had moved into
fourth by the end of the moto.
The IecOnd Open motl) saw Doug
Mundell, Yamaha of Astoria, get the
holeshot into the first tum. Herluti was
fifth and by the end of the first lap,
had moved into second behind
Mundell. Azar had a disastrous
scratch and' was running eighth at the
end of the fmt lap. Mundell felt the
pressure from Berluti's Maico,
bObbled a bit. and let Berluri by.
About this time, Clay Azar realized
the money was riding. on his finish and
he dialed it from eighth to second in
four laps. He then began his drive to
pass Herhiti. Allen had different ideas
and he wrung-out his Pro-Trac Maico
to the wire for the top spot, on the
second go round. AuI' got the overall,
Berluti second and Chris Washburn
third. The fine Open Pro dass show
was all t.he talk as the spectators
headed for the concession stand.
Thirty-four 250cc Pro riders blasted
off the line for their fmt ride of the
day. Steve Pless, on 'his Cycle Sport
Kawasaki, ran the first lap in fUll
place after a fantastic holeshot. Allen
Pitts (Suz) was right behind him in
second_ Not fOr long, though; Ron
Sun (Hus), fresh off the national trail,
came. looming up in his rear-view
mirror (?) and by lap two it was all
over as Sun widened his lead to take
the moto. Clay' Azar (I:.OP) rode
through the pack to fmish IecOnd and
Allen Herluti (Pro-Trac Maico) tied
up third.
The sec...nd moto saw Dave Coupe
(Pro- Trac Suz) get·a great IItart but
Sun, too, was coming off a good drive
and that was all he needed to smoothly
pass Coupe for the lead. Steve Pless
(Kaw), riding for Cycle Sport, got by
Coupe and moved into secOlld. But
Pless broke, and" AuI', the same guy
who's been giving everybody fits,
moved into second and held it. Tim
Michletseh, a victim of a fint tum
pileup, was running almost dead last
but he motored to sixth by moto's end.
Kevin jansen (Kaw) put iri a smooth
ride for fifth by moto's end and Berluti
smoothed ,his way to. third behind
Azar.
The 125cc Pros were all lined up'
and as the gate dropped, Kyle
LOndram (Suz) from Houston, Texas,
took charge of the pack. After lap two,
Steve Pless (Kaw) had moved into first,
but he lost it to Kyle again who held on
for two laps until Tim Michletseh
hurried throuSh traffic to assume his
accustomed place at the head of the
pack. Londram hung onto second
hehind Michletseh and Kevin lansen
bliued into third just ahead 0 Mike
McCormick who had worked up to
fourth at moto's end. Chris ScInes
(Suz), who has had a continued run of
bad luck, lost a chain for a DNF.
Mike McCormick got the second
moto, first turn benefit and began his
charge. Darryl Zumstein, Woodland
Honda, was also running fast but
Michletsch, suffering from a fall, has
to charge again up through the pack.
He managed a seventh before time ran
out for a fourth overall tn the 125cc
Proda55.
Meanwhile, McCormick was motoring and jeff Cropper (Suz) was out in
front, flat flying off the downhills.
McCormick stayed with him, like a
magnet but Kevin jansen (Kaw) was
gaining on the leaders. When it was all
~, McCormick had pulled off his
first ever" overall at Washougal.
Cropper had won the moto bur'
-McCormick won the war. jansen
picked up third and Michletsch, after
a frustrating day, took fourth. Darryl
Zumstein, 5-3, was second overall.

Sal HoffmaB coaly held off some
hot competition at the Sono.ma
County Fair's annual short track
motorcycle race to win the 250cc
Expert and 500cc Expert dasses in a
big way. The Class C junior was
preparing for the mid-season assault at
Ascot Park: and is really ~etting
psyched up for it.
Charlie Venegas' led out the
proceedings with a big win in the
combined 80/1 OOcc Novice/junior,
beating out john LaMont's 100 YZ,
while Aaron Hill easily 'won the 80cc
Expert and uncontested P.Dints for the
top Black Plate in mirnbik:es. Larry
Staggs came back from a second in
that battle to win the l00cc Expert
with HOWle Ross easing off on the httle
kids. Mike Macedo was in for a second
and third for the nighl.
Bob "Kid" Curry came from the
Sacramento area to become the big
hero i"n the 125/200cc show by
winning his second fair night show
over Steve Hammerich. But the
younger brother of the racing
Hamerrich duo came bad to win the
250cc Novice over john Sundberg and
Tim Bucholu in a real battle to the
checkered.
jon Eichelbaugh passed his way to
the 250cc junior win with Brandon
Carnahan reluctantly giving up the
post for second on the Reno Honda
special.
.
Sal Hoffman walked off with the
first of his double wins, leading Teddy
Davidson and Billy Scott all the way in
one of the few easy 250cc Expert
shows. Ray Fabbri charged up the
crowd with a good S60cc Novice win
over Rod Avilla while big brother
Mike Hammerich showed little
brother Steve he can win 'em big too
by taking the S60cc junior over a
faltering Ricky Vassallo.
YOI1ng Dave Boyles grabbed a good
360cc Expert win, leading the crowd
for the distance on his Spinelli Honda.
while Rid Delacy wound up holding
second position on his Gary Contemo
360 Yamaha. Dwayne McCaslin came
off a real bump and run job, courtesy
of Bill Hermant, into Chuck Gondala.
It was a real crowded situation with a
narrow path up (and on) the fence for
some.
Kelly Bennett came out of hiding
for the 500cc Novice win with Heft
Huggins and Steve Brown doing the
following. joe Mitchell wants everyone
to know that becoming a junior hasn't
changed his winning ways. He pTOYed
it by leading and trophying over Larry
Morrison.
It was the Yamaha of San Franciaco
ace, Hoffman, once again in the 500cc
Expert, winning big over Bill Scott's
super IT 500. Duane Spence who was
in for third, is getting ready to build
up another trick scoot; once he gets me
to'get him some parts.
