charging and took second at the checkered flag, followed by Epstein (running for no points) and jack Baker, on his amazing Heigho Racing Yamaha 500 thumper. Ritter finished fifth overall, with Pietri (who. had a nasty high·speed wobble) dropping out of contention. After the Breese/Morris sidehack team (sponsored by Barbara's Answer· ing Service in Menlo Park) opened the day's races with yet another triumph, Danny Kirkeby (Redline Hon MTI25R) led off 125cc GP with a huge lead over Danny Coe (Can· Am/Cycle C·A 125) and Fred Merkel (Penero/Redline Hon MTI25R). By lap four Coe was experiencing tire problems and yielded to Merkel and Fred Winters (Bel Ray/ND Hon MTI25R). At the halfway mark it was still Kirkeby by a wide margin. followed by Merkel. Winters, and Coe. However, the race tightened up during the last two laps as Winters passed Merkel and began closing on Kirkeby. As they came through the esses and down the hill on the last lap, Winters was right on Kirkeby's tail going through turns 10 and II. Coming out of the II hairpin, Winters tucked in and slingshotted past Danny to win by less than two feet, leaving Kirkeby clenching his fist if! frustration. Lightweight Suprstreet was won by Berkeley's john Williams (Bill Smith/ Berkeley Yam RD400) after he got by early leader Nick Theroux (D & D/MC Eng.lRedline/Lillie Yam SR500). Theroux opened up a 50-foot lead on the first lap, but saw the lead disappear and his lap times drop when Williams started chasing. The pace proved too much for Nick, and he settled for second place on his outrageously trick SR500, complete with custom frame, anti·dive front end, and dual Sifton brakes. Unsponsored Bob Runyon (Yam RD400) got by Marc Salvisberg (Karl's M/C Yam RD550) for third place. The next AFM race at Sears Point will be the Golden Gate Challenge IV on' August 25-26. The Challenge is a money race' that features the best riders of the northern chapter versus the best of the south. This race is in addition to the usual slate of club races, and is the site of the fourth annual Sunaay Morning Hangover. Results for 410cc Box Stock are not included, as the entire class is under investigation by the AFM National Board. Brought to the attention of rider reps Mike johnson and john Glover two months ago, the center of controversy is the "butterfly valve" mounted on tbe exhaust side of RD400 Fs and the modifications or adjust· ments to this smog device. Watch Cycle News for the Board's decision. RHU~ 1. Br-'Morria l!C8wl: 2. SlDECAIlS: • _~ lSuzl: 3. EouIIIHIrrokl 0UwI. 12See GP: 1. fnId Winlfn (Honl: 2.
