BIg bikes highlIght ElsllJOre AliA short track qualifier By Dave Miller Photo by Dan Mahonyl Wizard Racing Photography LAKE ELSINORE, CA,jULY21-22 Final qualifier for the short track nationals in Porterville this August came and went with most of the action confined to the big bike divisions. .. 32 Insuring the success of the event was a new course especially prepared by the management of Lake Elsinore Raceway for the short track qualifier. Traces of the heavy rain which pounded the area early Friday morning, along' with more than adequate lightning were absent by the time races got underway Saturday. While the outcome had little affect on qualification for the nationals, Sunday race results at 500cc were held up until Mike Montgomery, who appeared to have finished first, agreed to relinquish his win and settle for second place due to a near-mishap which involved an also· ran bike and Danny jones. jones was cruising along to an apparent victory when a mishap involving a bike returning to the track in front of him forced him to slow. This allowed Montgomery to pass_ safely and ride to an apparent victory. With the yield of first place to Jones by Montgomery, Jones finished the two-day event tied as number one qualifier at 500cc with Rex Hailey, who finished in third place in the Sunday race. Montgomery's self· imposed ~cond place finish Sunday made him the number thr~ qualifier for the August nationals. Beyond the tough- !>oocc class, it' appeared if you won on Sunday, you came out the top qualifier during the two-day event. Such was the case for Robert Land in the 12!>cc class, but a third place finish Sunday, insured Darren Hulbert the second qualifier's slot and a four!h place finish gave Brian Yocum the points necessary for third. ~ 1. Gibson takes two atSSlIlIX By Terry Whytel ORANGE, CA,jULY 21 Team Honda rider Jim Gibson rode two classes at this SSM MX and came away with the top money in both races. While Gibson was showing the way to the 250 and 125cc Pros, Scott Gillman rode a new box stock RM400 Suzuki to victory in the Open Pro class. With a $700 purse up for grabs the local Pros came out in force. 4ning up for the start of the first moto were top riden like Husky-mounted Goat Breker, Kawasaki rider Robert Reisinger, Pete Snort~land on a CanAm and Lenny Giger just back from the Nationals with his super fast Kawasaki. Mark Lawrence were there riding his Yamaha Support YZ and recent SSM winner Randy Rodriquez had his Maico straining at the gate but when the flag dropped, Gibson went for the lead estalilishing command of the race almost immediately. At the end of the first lap die order of the top five was: Gibson, Giger, Snorteland. Lawrence and Breker all chasing Gibson. On the fourth lap Lawrence passed Snorteland and Breker followed a lap later. Rodriquez moved into fifth to put pressure on Snorteland. Giger was doing an excellent job of holding off Lawrence and Breker for second until halfway through the moto when first Lawrence and then Breker slipped by. On the next lap Breker put the move on Lawrence and took over second. Breker began to close the gap on Gibson towards the end of the molO, while Lawrence DNF because of mechanical problems. At the checkers Gibson was still safely in the lead and Breker had to settle for second ahead of Giger and Snorteland. Once again Gibson timed the gate right, and kept the gas on through the first comer to quickly open a three bike lead on the pack. As the first lap ended Gibson was five lengths ahead of Giger and Reisinger. Snorteland was in fourth and Breker came around in ruth. The next 40 minutes consisted of Gibson running away with the race while the battle· for second through ruth turned into a dog fight. Four riders slammed and bounced their way around the track with Breker slowly working his way past Snorteland, Reisinger and rmally Giger to again finish second. Giger managed to hold off Reisinger to finish third. Overall the win was all Gibson's with Brelter a well earned second and Giger third. Gibson ran away with the 125cc Pro race, leaving Suzuki riders Craig Dale and Huff Hadley 'to argue over second. Eventually Dale went home with the second place money and Hadley was third. . The Open Pro race was a case of "almost" for Anaheim Suzuki's Scott Cavness. Cavness almost won the first moto, holding off Gillman and KTM· mounted Ed Arne! for nearly the entire race until a lapped rider cut him off and let Gillman and Arnet by. Cavness led the second moto for most of the race, keeping National veterans Steve Rhyan and Gillman behind him. Suddenly Cavness was down in a tight tum with his throttle tom from the bars and his day was over. Gillman
