; ,~~~~~~~~~~~-~~~~~~~~~, Sixteen men and their machines funneled into the first comer and they all bumped elbows. Steve Bauer (Hon) got the jump on the pack and powered out ahead of them for the entire race. Bauer took the first wave of the checkered flag and walked off with the largest cash prize. Todd Peterson placed second overall after crashing into Tim Lunde and pushing Tim back into third. Going down just one rank the 250 Intermediates had a fine turnout and a total of 16 riders competed. One of the hometown riders, Troy Manning, was the star of the first moto. Manning, mounted on a Suzuki, flew by the finish comer to chatch the first wave of the flag from Dick Atkins. Not too far from behind charged Dave Pettigrew on a Wheelsmith Maico. In the second moto Pettigrew hauled away from the group while Manning had a bad race and was knocked way down into eighth. Pettigrew took the top overall honors. Although he was never in front, Tim May ended up winning second because of his fme 4·3 score. Manning had to settle for the third place trophy. I 81 'm . Small Medium Large X·Urge I;;·BI.. I~ Pete Hames became a double threat Thursday night at Corona Raceway as he added a 500cc Yamaha to his stable of bikes and the Open boys felt his bite on both the short track and half mile. On the half mile the "Semi Flash" was pitted against some strong com· petition but it didn't seem to faze him as he went wire to wire to take the Open win. Earl Roloff and Charlie Summers got off in the 2·3 spots and one lap later had switched places. Summers stayed ahead of Roloff until the eighth lap and it was Roloffs turn to lead the way. This time Summers' didn't come back and had to settle for third behind Hames and Roloff. In the Open Money short track it was a battle between Hames and Mike Montgomery and again Hames went wire to wire but this time it wasn't quite so easy as Montgomery is a master at setting up a rider and then making his move. Hames was well aware of it and rode a very defensive race. Ed Steffen came up with the third after a bit of trouble from a very hard charging young lady from the state of New York, Arlene Smith. Hames claimed one more win for his night's work but the 250cc Money short track was the hardest.
