Rodrigues roosfs AMEnlghf mlnicross By Judy Greenberg Photo by Bob Greenberg VALE~CIA, CA,..:JULY 20 A large turnout of riders. added to an exciting night of raCing with the American Motocross Enterprises Minicycle- Division Friday night at Indian Dunes.' • 26 Johnnie Rodrigues took the honors for the 12 and over 8Scc Modified Juniors, with a }.} ride on his West Cycle Kawasaki. Mark Celebron (Paughco) controlled second, while Alan Lippie and David Ethel diced for third with Lippie the victor. Randal Sialana kept Tony Mayes behind him to finish fifth. When Rodrigues took off to a second victory, Lippie, Celebron, and Mayes battled wildly for the .number two spot. Lippie had the advantage and held it to the wire for the night's second overall. Dennis Chick left the first gate in . lead of the 8Scc Stock 9·1 I Juniors, only to find Jason Stephens (Glenwood Ins.) peering down his pipe. When Darryl Chereshkoff and Carl Tignino closed in, Chick gained a little ground on Stephens. The battle between. Tignino and Chereshkoff tightened, as Stephens closed back in on Chick. Over the tower jump, Tignino made his move' and took over third. With one lap to go, he poured on the gas and took second from Stephens. Chick went wire to wire the second time out. Stephens rode strong to finish second, with Robert Wilhelm taking third. Buddy Dumo (Suzuki Sports Center), Michael Knapp (R&D) and earl Tignino held a melee in both motas of the Junior Cycle Modified Experts. Dumo and Knapp swapped moto wins, with Dumo winning the tie· breaking final. Tignino went S·S in both. Results PEE WEE MOD: ,. MII\t Blecldock ISUl); 2. Keyle Johnoon ISUl); 3. Josh Melching ISUl}. Corona packs 'em In By Ron Lawson CORONA, CA, JULY 20 Corona Raceway continues- to draw one of southern California's biggest night MX crowds into Riverside county every Friday night, with rider turnout nearing the SOO mark last week. The 125cc Pro class was 50 full tbat it had to be divided into two races, with the top finishers in each division going to a single main event. Division one, moto one saw DG's John Greenway (Hon) run away from the pack.. He pulled the holeshot while Riverside Suzuki rider Rick Stout (Suz) struggled with a fourth place start behind Fred Conover (Kaw) and Vinnie DiPadova (Suz). It took Stout four laps to work his way up to second place, but by that time Greenway was long gone. Robert Green (Suz), seventh off the line, eventually worked up to finish third behind Stout. In the next qualifying moto, Green· way started to do the same thing right from the start with Stout locked into second and Todd Baldwin (Suz) third. But this time Greenway's red machine started to sputter badly halfway through the race, allowing Stout and Baldwin to catch right up. Stout even . managed to get by the leader and stay out front for a couple laps, but Greenway was determined to win in spite of his handicap, and just before the white flag came out he repassed Stout. Greenway, Stout, Green and • Baldwin all made the main accordiDg to their combined performances in the two qualifying motos. . The second division bf 125cc Pros saw Craig Dale (Suzulti West) and Troy Lee (Suz) trade wins. Lee got the holeshot in roand one, but Dale shot past him on tbe second lap. The two of them then built a strong lead on the rest of tbe paclt. Goat Brelter (Hus), malting a rare 125cc showing, held third briefly but was soon out· powered by Keith Williamson (Suz), Danny Burtt (Suz) and Andy Orescanin (Suz). Orescanin then moved up past Burtt and Williamson into third, and then in the final laps, Burtt also picked up a spot by passing Williamson. The second race had Dale get tbe holeshot only to trade positions with Lee halfway through the moto. Lee held the lead all the way. to the end while Burtt and Williamson rounded out the top four. When it was time for the main event, Dale was ready. He jumped into an early lead with Greenway in his shadow. But Greenway had just gotten off his 250cc bike after running a hard race and he wasn't riding in top form. Dale was able to pull a small lead on him while Stout was baclt in third with his hands full trying to hold off Lee. Another few seconds back was a three way battle between Orescanin, Burtt and Williamson, with Orescanin holding a slight edge. The race remained like that for most oi the laps, but near the end Lee passed Stout and both Burtt and Williamson found a way around Ore5canin. Dale and Greenway won with a healthy lead over the rest of the pack. The 250cc Pro second moto held one of the closest races ever seen at Corona. While Greenway was able to take the first round without too much trouble, Marty Miller (Suz) and Goat Brelter (Hus) argued over second, in the next race he and Miller were racing. Breker had dropped out of the race with a seized motor, leaving the two riders to put on a show by themselves and that is exactly what they did. Greenway was in front most of t·he time, but Miller was always on one side or the other. Finally they both went into a tum side by side where there was only room for one and they both fell. Miller remounted the quickest, but once again Greenway was right beside him. The following lap Greenway regained the lead. but
