R, Edge Photo by Karl Holfeld ANCHORAGE, AK, JUNE !lO-jULY 1 Riders from Alaska and the Yukon Territory of Canada converged on Kincaid Park to find out who's best in the far nonhwest by competing in the second of five rounds in the Alaska State Motocross Championship Series. The rider accumulating the most points from all five rounds in each class (125cc, 25Occ, and 500cc Expert) will become the 1979 Alaska State MotOC1"Ollll Champion. Reigning 125/250cc champ Scott Davis of Soldotna and 500cc champ Jim Stewan of Anchorage showed up to defend their titles against a large pack of challengers. Saturday'S racing was dominated by Scott Davis and Anchorage's Chris Patterson. Patterson won all three motos of the 500cc Expert class, encountering almost no competition from the rest of the pack. Jim Stewart (KTM) pulled the holeshot every moto but eventually tired, allowing the Maico mounted Patterson to take'the checkered flag. Stewan wasn't too tired to hold on to second though. Scott Davis easily topped the 250cc Expen class as he styled his Suzuki to a first in each moto while far hehind the "rest of the pack" battled for second. Second place honon went to Canadian AI Tikiniski. Davis repeated his 250cc victories by also taking the 125ec Expen class overall win. He didn't dominate all the motos this time, though; a flat tire slowed him to a founh in the last moto. Davis was constantly pressured by Anchorage rider Jeff Wolverton (Suz) who couldn't quite muster the speed needed to pass Davis but stayed with him all the way. The racing on Sunday yielded no new winners but did feature some close competition. Stewart pushed a little harder and came away with a second moto win but the 500cc Expert class overall still went to a tireless Patterson. Once again Davis zapped the 250cc class for an unchallenged overall win. Second went to Tikiniski again but Jeff MacDonald, of Fairbanks, didn't make it easy for the Canadian. and even won one moto. The most exciting competition of the weekend had to be in the 125cc class. Wolvenon really gassed it to give the spectators some first class action in the first moto as he and DaviS locked handlebars' on practically every corner. They fought it out right to the finish line with Wolverton taking advantage of a missed shift by Davis to take the win by less than a foot. Luck wasn't with Wolverton in the remaining two motos though; electrical problems left him with middle of the pack finishes. All the riders are looking forward to more racing. The championship baule continues with round three at Soldoma, A1aslta. Results JUNE 30,1979 MINI: 1. DImln IIIooIta- CKawt. 2. TocId Sc:hrur lSuzl; 3. Kevin ~ lSuzI. 125 NOV: 1. John DevillYam~2.
