Since their dieing carried them away from Dave Garoutte (DKG/S.F. Yam/SJ. Yam TZ) and AI Collins (Eric Heczko Tl 250), Shopher's dump left the Ted Dannsponsored rider all by himself in the lead. Collins made his move early and passed Garoutte on the same lap as Shopher's crash; he held on for the remaining six laps to clain second place. Self·sponsored Gil Martin (Yam TZ750) trekked up from San Diego and took the Open GP win with Bruce Hammer (Kal Gard TZ750) placing second. Heavyweight Superstreet, the class that most resembles the AMA's Superbike Production, was won by Harry Klinzmann (Racecrafters/Ker· kerfAction Fours/Kawasaki Motors l-I). Vance Breese (Euromart Corp. Moto Guzzi Le Mans) did his usual thing and won the big-bore Production race, but a new kid on the block, Mike Spencer (Champion Kawasaki KZ650), made his way past Bernd Koegler on his self-sponsored 900cc Honda Four and then passed Paul Vogel (Norm Westergard M·G Le Mans) to finish in . second position. with VogeI.settiing for third overall. The opening race of the day, the Featherweight class (50-100cc GP/ 125·200cc Prod), featured the return of AFM favorite Gordy Seim of Santa Maria. The SlitS Kawasaki whiz, on his now-famous 175cc Can·Am, promptly got down to business and rocketed to second position behind jon Lisker. Lisker was on another C-A, sponsored by the Dimond Dynaflos. However, on lap four, john Chermak (Berkeley Yamaha) got by both Seim and Lisker for the lead on his now· famous Yamaha 200cc two·stroke twin. Charles Pace, on yet another Can·Am and a teammate of Seim's, worked his way into second and started pressuring Chermak for the lead. john eventually pulled away for the win, but Seim made a last· lap charge and caught Pace in the hills. Chuck paAed Gordy as they flew down the hill through tum 10, with Seim outbraking Chuck going into tum II. Pace's bike had more beans, however, and he beat Seim to the flag by less than a wheel's length. !'receding the Sidecar race (won by the Breese/Morris Kawasaki.powered rig), the Box Stock race provided more than its share of excitement. Fred Koren (South City Honda CBX) rocketed off the line and blazed up the hill, pursued by Frank Mazur on his ageless 10-year-old CB750 and Rich Oliver on his Kawasaki of Monterey tl KZ650. Oliver then picked off Mazur and on the third lap passed the CBX in turn 10 in a single smooth move. Rich continued to pull away, leaving Koren and Mazur to battle for second place; a battle that demonstrated that, after all, "there is no replacement for displacement." It was the first AFM class win for the much·heralded CBX, and the best finish in awhile for Koren, former 550cc Production champ. Bates Leathers reps were in attendance at the race, handing out T -shirts and paying prizes to top finishers wearing their leathers. Bates promises to repeat their generosity next year with a three or four-race series and handsome awards. Roller skate racing on the short course, followed by Frank Mazur's protest of Dave Garoutte's win (cutting the race course).
