In the case of the motocross rider, the Sports Car Racing Association of Monterey Peninsula has heard your pleas and dirt racing lives at Laguna Seca. The new Laguna Seca sportS some mighty changes as the County takes over from the former government owners 'and tries to appeal to more than sports car lovers. Just behind the turn seven area of the famous race circuit, in a natural amphitheater. a one· half mile natural terrain track was laid out, and with lots of great help from the Salinas Rambler M.C.. a race actually came off Dn Saturday. The entry was limited but the racing was great. despite the new course dust syndrome which was more than. ade.quately dealt with by Granite Construction trucks under the guidance of Jim Martin and Yamaha of Salinas' Chris Buckner. Riding over the side of hills and a double downhill jump made for a thriller circuit and good potential for the future. Steve Machado smoked both ends of the IOOcc Sportsman class while Todd Fikes took second with a 4-4 score. Don 'Poetzsch did a fine job of staying in the 125cc Novice hunt, despite lots of get·offs in' the tricky terrain, with a 1-3 score. Chris Terry tried exceptionally hard. and came up second on the NorCal Suzuki with a 24 over AI Silhanek in for third on the Jensen Cycle·Suzuki. Roger McCoy took both ends of the biggest class of the day, riding his Concord Yamaha YZ 2M to a big 1-1 perfect score over Ken Bergeson's 3-2 and Mike Lambert's 2·5. Ron Nielson did likewise in the Open Novice with a 1·1 over John Kusamovich who was in .with a 3-3. Mike Holmes appears to be ready for the Expert class with a great 125cc Junior win over Jeff Johnson. The two young speedsters diced throughout the two·sets with each leading and either falling or crashing out. The tight off· camber up and down hills were quite tough to just trek over, but trying to pass. or keep someone from passing, made for grea~ viewing, which many of the sports car group did. Kevin Hildegrand took a seeond mota win to wrap up the 250cc Junior class with a 3·1 over John McLeod. Steve Kusanovich aced the Open Junior run over David Nance and Mike Sprenger won the 125cc Expert portion of all Experts combined. Ken Netto on the Yamaha of Salinas YZ took the overall in front of Doug McRae. D·36's number one Vet is Steve Mac'hado and he proved his worth in winning both motos of the Vet/OT class over a hard charging Bruce MacArthur (who caused at least one eqrthquake while leading the second mota after running of( the course and through nearly all the crowd on. his South City Cycle Maico). 2860 E.
