CA 91304 Modified Intermediate 12-16 class with a 2-4 finish over Kawasaki rider Mike Fisher who had a 7-2 finishl In the 9-11 year old Intermediates it was all Kurt Hendricksen, who went 1-2 over Scott Brown (S-I) in the Stock class and 2-1 over John Conney (S-S) in the Modified dass. The 12-16-year-old Novice classeS produced two big wins for second time visitor Doug O'Donnell (Suz) who went two for two in the Modified class and had a great comeback victory in the Stock class with a 5-1 finish over another visitor, Yamaha rider Chris Taylor. Kawasaki mounted Curtis Rough took two close ones in the 125cc Expert class over David McGhee (Kaw), the really big action came in the Intermediates where "Wail in' Woody" Carlson came up with the Stock class win and new Intermediate Jack Lewis (Suz) grabbed a tie breaker Modified win. Carlson had a tougll win as he swapped first and fifth place finishes with Lloyd Thomas with the San Diego Kawasaki rider Carlson getting his win on the right end of the class. Jack Lewis made his move into the Intermediates a winning one as he upset the favored Carlson with a hard fought tie breaker win in the second moto. Lots of good racing in the 125cc Novices with visiting Kawasaki rider Jerry Campbell going two for two over Bob Voorheas (Suz) in the Modified class and a career first win for Darryl Gurholt (Yam) in the Stock class. Gurholt's 1-2 finish win was somewhat overshadowed by a really great second moto win by April Dunlap who had a bad spill in the first moto (while running third). April will letter in three sports this year at Santana High School: baseball, track and motocross. She not only helped Santana in its third straight title win in the Coke/San Diego High School MX Championships at Speedway 117 this year, but she is an AII-CIF girls softball catcher and a top member of the girls' track team. The normal third Sunday race for the month ofJune will be shifted to the fourth Sunday, June 24, so as not to conflict with the NMA National at Adelanto. Results BOcc MINlCVCLE CLASSES STOCK EX: ,. JUNIOR CVCLE ClASSES In the Mini Stock class some very young uphill racers were up against one another. Michele Childus took top honors over 10-year-old Keith Cooke and Cherie LaRue. Steve Stith won the 125cc class as he usually does. The 250cc Stock class went to Carl Collier over Perry Edwards while Ray Simmons took the S60cc class and Rick Groen, who came all the way from nonhern California, topped the 400s. Steve Poutous out dragged Kent Morgan for the 500.:c- win while Ken Mooers took the 65bs. It was in the modified classes that the racing became close. Dick DeRosa became the only double winner of the day when he took the 25 I to 400cc bikes and then turned around and did the same to the 401 to 500cc machines. Gary Hall followed him in the smaller class while Kent Morgan was runner up in the 500s. Bob Baker took the lion's share of the $500 up for grabs in the 650cc class with Steve Poutous following ahead of Dick DeRosa (again). But what everyone was waiting for, of course, was the big money dice in the Open class. It was in that class that last year's winer Ron True was pitting his British machinery against George Tidwell's powerful four cylinder Honda as well as Steve Kain's mega buck Minnesota monster and Tom LaRue's big twin: When the dust cleared, LaRue was on top with Kain making his trip from Minneapolis pay off with second place. True, Tidwell, Mike Gebbardt, Tom Daugheny and Bob Day also finished in the cash. At the end of the day the winners 0 all the modified classes were run against each other to determine the overall victor and LaRue was again on top.
