VALENCIA, CA, MAY 27
It was a great day of racing put
on by American Motocross Enterprises, at Indian Dunes on the
Shadow Glen course.
40
Masuda reeled Hubbs iii to claim
second on lap nine. Ron Turner
(Yam) did liltewise to Tim Lunde
(Yam) a couple laps from the end for
fourth.
Gibson had no problems in the
second moto, leading from stan to
finish for an impressive win. Behind
him, though, a real duel for second
developed in the final laps with Steve
Bauer (Hon) barely holding off
Turner and Lunde. Tony' Wanket
(Yam) claimed fifth.
The !>OOcc Pro class proved to be an
exciting prelude to the upcoming GP.
Steve Walker (Yam) got the first mota
holeshot and led until lap two when
Arden Hadley (Mai) zapped him on
the uphill.
Tripes slipped by a lap later and set
out for Hadley. Slowly, deliberately,
he got Hadley within range and
pounced on him on the downhill at the
moto's ha'lfway point. Turner must
haye been in Tripes' slipstream as he
also went by the Maico pilot at the
same time.
Turner coaxed a little more speed
out of his bike the next lap and
bounced past Tripes on the downhill
for the lead.
Tripes gathered himself for one
final effon, though, and pulled
Turner on the uphill on lap II,
keeping it to the checkered.
Chip Howell (Hus) got by Hadley on
the same lap for third while David
Gerig (Esc) held off Gary Jones (Amx)
for futh.
As success in the other two classes
had eluded him today, Tripes knew
the !>OOcc was his only chance of taking
home any money for his troubles.
With that in mind, he psyched himself
up and when the gate dropped for the
second moto, he was out front and
flying.
In his wake, Gerig maintained
second. Closing on him came Turner,
however, who tried several times to go
around Gerig in the sharp left-hander
at the base of the uphill.
He startled Gerig a couple of times
when he moved up on the outside,
grabbed Gerig's arm and yelled at
him. Quite a tactic for breaking your
opponent's concentration.
Turner finally went by for good on
lap eight. Howell also made a pass
stick there on the last lap to claim
third. Alan Smith (Hus), riding
superbly despite a severely bruised arm
The first race of the day was the
Open Pros, which proved to be a real
battle between Maico-mounted Dave
Haugh and Hal Strauss. Haugh pulled
the holeshot and the lead as the gate
dropped for the first round. Haugh set
up quite a lead as Strauss and Mark
White (Mai) were dicing it out for
second. Strauss maintained second
with White taking third as the
checkered flag dropped.
.
As the gate dropped for round two,
again it was Haugh with the holeshot
and the le.ad, again followed closely by
Strauss and White. This time out
Strauss was able to put the pass on
Haugh to take the win and the overall
with Haugh taking second and White
settling for third.
The 2!>Occ Pro race saw Can-Am
rider Donnie Hansen taking tile
holeshot and the lead. The mota
proved to be all Hansen as Tim Locey
(Yam) had to settle for second with
Bill Ovellette (Yam) taking third.
Mota two again saw Hansen taking the
lead with Locey in second and third
being filled by Ovellette. Locey
inherited the lead after Hansen went
down. The overall' win went to Locey
over Ovellette and Hansen.
The 12!>cc Pro race saw Suzuki rider
John O'Mara taking back to back wins
for the day as he fought off the strong
competition of Willie Simons (Yam)
who was able to capture the second
place spot and David Lynch (Yam)
who settled for third.

Olsen takes Old
nmersMX
By BobAJloy
VALENCIA, CA, MAY 20
The day started with a light rain
falling on the way to the Dunes.
As we hit Magic Mountain, the
mist stopped and we just had
another typical overcast May day. Just
right for racing and a break from the
100' heat of last week at Saddleback.
It all happened at the Shadow Glen
track. A few new lines were added but
that old river bottom sand is still there.
It starts out as one foot whoop-de-doos
which by the second mota are five-foot
chuckholes. Heaven help those that
slow down.
To start the action it was Blackie
Lewis of the Masters taking the lead
but Marshall Jennings dashed in and
took it away. However, this was no
comfortable lead as Marvin Olsen was
continually there and on the very last
lap he took it away from Jennings and
won the mota. Jennings had to settle
for second and it was Lewis in third
position. The second mota started OUI
with Blackie taking the holeshot once
again and leading for two laps.
Wanting to be heard again, Olsen
took the lead and carried it for firsl
place. Blackie followed Olsen in for
second and Jennings came in third.
Senior Experts had a lot of action.
First of all Ken Williams was out there
with the holeshol. Ray Sanchez then
passed Ken and held the lead for three
laps. Chuck Woody really did some
lhrottle twisting and took the lead
from Ray. This was quite an accomplishment for Chuck since he really
did gel a poor start. Sanchez was
second and Williams took third. Moto
IWO staned out wilh Doug Archibald
laking the holeshol and the ·lead for
lhree laps. After the third lap, Woody
grabbed the lead and held it. Sanchez,
with a not too powerful beginning,
managed to power up and take the
second position. Archibald rode in
with third place.
Dick Mosley fought and won moto
one in the Expert division. Giving
Mosley a rough time was Norm
Elledge who stayed in there but just
'didn't get around to passing. Elledge
came in second. In third place was
Chuck Strauss. Manny Dauber was the
numero uno rider from start to finish
in the second mota. Taking second
was Norm Elledge and Tom Widick
placed third.
Joe Bray was outstanding in both
motos of the Amateur division. He
took holeshots and both first place
wins. Asker Larnkjaer was second
place winner in both motos. He really
did some outstanding riding despite a
poor start. For the third position, in
mota one it was George O'Heaver and
in mota two it was Bob De Miranda.
Novice Bob Anderson knew what to
do as he blasted away with the lead in
mota one and he went on to win.
Following Anderson was Larry
Caldron and Bob Klatt. The second
mota slarted out like the first with
Anderson trying to take that firSI place
win. He held on for five laps al which
time Gene Powell approached and
took the lead. He then stayed ahead of
all and took the win. Anderson was
second and Klatt came in third.
