CA 91304 IAboveJ Jeff Watts ~ from Ieat pIKe In the second 2!iOcc Ex. moto to finish ..cond OVMIII at W........ (Below) A typiceI first tum traffic jam C8UMS trouble for • few. horde of riden. When the dust 'c1eared Bowen was okay - in fact he ended up fifth in the moto - but the lead had gone to Jerry ~novese. The Suzuki· mounted rider led through the front section of the course but lost traction on a tight corner near the old windmill and fell. Jeff Nicholson (Suz) inherited the lead and held off a strong challenge by Mike Randal (Suz) for the rest of lap one. Randal kept the pressure on and slipped by Nicholson as the two went under the oak tree at the beginning of the second lap. There is one very tight, fint gear turn aroupd a big eucalyptus tree which csalUed problems for quite a few riden during the day. One of the fint to fall prey to this tricky tum was Nicholson, who installed his motor as he rounded the comer while trying to get the lead back from Randal. When Nicholson stalled, Don Poetzsch (Suz) grabbed the second place spot and moved up to dice with Randal. The two riden went at it hot and heavy until near the end of the race when Poeusch also fell by the eucylaptus tree. He was able to get going in time to hang on to his second place spot and croued the line a little behind Randal. The second moto saw Randal with the first lap lead but. as fate would have it. he crashed right near the same spot, under the windmill, where he had gained the lead in moto one. Sam Knowlton (Suz). who had finished a strong third in the fust round. took over the lead when Randal crashed and held it until the end of the moto. fighting off a hard charge by Jerry Genovese and Raymond Castro (Suz). The ov~rall went to Knowlton by virtue of his conSistency. The second 125cc Novice division saw a good dice between Mark Mellander (Suz) and Earl Tanner (Yam) in the fint motQ. The two swapped the lead for a few laps until Jack ~novese (Hus) came up in third place to play with the leaders. ~novese was able to slip by Tanner for second place as Mellander crossed the finish line in fint. Moto two found hard-charging Jack Banon (Yam) leading the first four laps. holding off a determined Mellander who wanted to repeat his first moto win. ~novese was way back in founh at the end of the second lap but began to work his way up. He slipped by Mellander with two laps to go and put some heavy pressure on Banon. With only half a lap ~t in the race Banon slipped up on a comer and both ~novese and Mellandrr zipped by. ~novese rode on to the win with MeDander finishing second.
