._._._._._._._._._.. When the banner finally dropped . the Expe rt and Amateur classes screamed down the long sandwash . Before their dus t cleared . th e Inter mediates and Novices charged after them in the second wave. It was a tight squee ze amid the dust and flying mud into the narrow first tum onto ' the Shadow Glen track. At the end of the first section of asphalt , someone locked it up in a full slide. Kwik Keith served to avoid a collision, lost control and went down hard . Following closely, Bang Bang BoBo nearly flattened Keith , who picked himself up and finished the race with a broken ankle . Almost Al aimed his RM 400 at the ' water-jump ramp, but was waved off by the yellow flag, because an u nfor tuna te northern gang member looped it going off the ramp and lay in the river with a broken 1eg. Almost AI opted to slip off the bank and putt across the river, almost making it before drowning his bike in hip' high water. Barreling out of the winding sandy section, Bye-Bye Bob over exuberantly passed Nee-hi Norm and looped his Suzuki on the dubious mound jump leading onto the International track and got to ride in the ambulance. At the completion of the first lap, Expert Lanky Larry led the pack all the way, with Roll -Over Rick , Rathole Rocky , and Vegas member Raunchy Ray in hot pursuit. Between the second and third laps, Roll-Over Rick . desperately trying to catch Lanky Larry, wrung his Yamaha's neck and seized the engine. Rathole Rocky moved up with Raunchy Ray and Corroded Carlos taking third and fourth . It was the Las Vegas boys, all riding Maicos, who sewed up the Amateur class. L.A .'s Burn-em Butch briefly burned himself a lead on the first lap. However, Vegas' Dumpin' Da n smoked him on the second lap, going on to win , with Majestic Mojeske and Digger Dale finishing second and third respectively. What Vegas did to the Amateurs, the North did to the Intermediates. W ith the exception of Jinx Jerry, who staunchly defended second place throughout the battle, and Ruptured Rusty, who held third place only for a lap, it was the North's Limp Leon, Walking Wmy, and Hang-on Harold who took home most of the brass. - In the Novice class, it was an equal split between Las Vegas and L.A. Vegas' Meek Mike and Gorgeous George captured first and second places. L.A. 's Alkatraz AI, returning from a three month layoff, held third for two laps, but finished fourth . Juiey Jim miraculously came from last place to finish third. Results EXPERT 1. lanky Larry (Yam) 2. Rathole Rocky : ; (Yam) 3. Raunchy Ray (Mail. ; AM: 1. Dumpin' Don (Mail; 2.
