According to witnesses along the track and Mike Baeder and John Gidney who were racing right bebind , him , the front end of his motorcycle washed away as he was negotiating the corner. Wakefield was thrown into the wall and hit it at a speed exceeding 130 mph. Wakefield was rushed to the hospital, where he later died . At the restart, Gidney decided not to race. "I could not stand what I saw, it made me sick." Baeder then cruised 'to an easy victory over Richard Williamson (Kal Guard Yam). The day started with a vintage race organized by the BSA Owners club and Barry Smith, its president. David Breetwor on a BSA won followed by the other BSA of Henry Costales. and the AJS.of William Bass. The 550ccl750cc/Open Production race was a very close one with Whitney Blakeslee (Champion Kaw), Wendell Phillips (Mr. Jag's Sudco Nor) , . Lee Flemming (Champion Due) and Steve Gerki (Kaw) . . On the first lap it ' was Blakeslee, Gerki , Phillips, and Flemming. Phillips pasSed Gerki and so did Flemming. Phillips tried very hard to get by Blakeslee, and on the fifth lap he succeeded and started to pull away . Flemming and Gerki were third and fourth, and in fifth place was the surprising Ed Toomey on his RD 350 Yamaha. On the next to last lap, Blakeslee passed Phillips in turn 10, a sharp right bander at the end 'o f the back straight.
