Miller mauls DeAnzaMX By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD. CA, MAY 13 The 250cc Expert class was once again the biggest race of the day at DeAnza Cycle Park and the racing was very close . While it was Red la nd s Suzuki rider Marty Miller who took home the win, it was Danny Burtt, also of Redlands Suz uki , who captured the oohs and aahs of the spectators, winning the first moto with a fantastic lead and taking third in the next round after a last place start and a crash made him the underdog. In the first ro und, however, it was Miller who had to make u p time while the holeshot : went to Bob Brote n (Yam) and Jerry Hensley (Suz) . Burtt rook the lead befo re one lap was complete and soon he was pulling away at an incredible rate. Miller was doing some impressive riding of his own after an eighth place start and by the second lap he had made it all the way to fourth behind Burtt, Hensley and Mark Barnes (Yam). Hensley's race suffered a major setback when he went down and lost 12 places before he . could remount. That left Barnes and Miller all by themselves to battle for second. On lap six , Miller squeezed on the inside of Ba rnes. and the two riders ta ngled briefly, with Barnes coming out of it with a dead motor. Miller was then in a secure second bu t Burtt already had a 30-second lead and Miller had 10 be content to finish where he was . J uan Benavid ez (Yam) finished third ahead of Ba rnes and Steve Da vis (Hon), who spent the whole race making u p for lost time. In the next moto, Miller and Davis jumped into an early lead and diced back and forth for several laps before Miller took first place for keeps . Burtt was last out of the hole, but by the fourth turn he was already in ninth. He continued his advance by moving up to fourth by lap three and then to third by lap six . But then he came ' u po n the warring duo of Davis and Miller and his charge came to a halt. All three riders engaged in a three way struggle that lasted half the race. As they came into the final laps. Burtt shot under Davis and then tried to make premature move on Miller which resulted in a crash and ended his hopes for ' the win . Miller went on to a well deserved first followed by Davis , Burtt, Benavidez and Danny Jean (Suz ). Andy Orescanin (Suz) put in a 3-1 ride in the 125cc Expert class to take the money while Dave Williams (Mai). now riding for Malcolm Smith, stole the show in the Open class. Resu lts PEE WEE 1: 1.
