Rio Bravo race fans were just as disappointed as these unfortunate riders were about the muddy conditions. But you can bet the fans had a few laughs. continued his assault on the championship with a third overall but he did not appear comfortabl e in the mud . Gl en Johnson (H oward Raci ng . Pa saden a Kawasaki ) roos te d some Gulf Coast mud all over the l 25cc Expert cl ass easi ly winning both motos, a nd fou nd himself in the lead for T ex as Series poi nts. A lot o f J oh nso n's success resul ted from th e fac t that he was a ble to find lines throug h the muck which avoi ded som e of the treachero us r uts tha t h ad elimi nated m o re than o ne ri d e r. Fin ishing second a nd third overall were locals Greg Howa rd and Bra d Bu rks. Both demonst ra ted exce pti onal a bility to maneuver th rou gh traffic on a slick, on e-lin e tra ck. Billy Click (H on) was so delighted ab ou t his goo d fortun e' t ha t he screamed out his pleasure du ring the fina l lap of th e Over-30 Expert class . Click, . a two ti me ' GNC Astrodome O ver -Stl Champion , cou ld n' t catch Mai co mounted Robert Hereford in moto on e but on the first lap of mo ro two Hereford crashed in the mud and Click wa ltzed by for the moto win and the overall. Ben Baxter, Jr. (Suz) put in a steady performance for second overall , Robert Hereford third ; and Wyman Priddy (Hon) and Ernie Mit ch ell (Suz) had a few problems enroute to fourth and fifth . Houston hotshots John Pollard and Hunter Carruthers won the 125cc Intermediate classes A and B. Both had near flawless performances in the mud on their home track and nei ther were seriously challenged for the first overall positions. Chris Hipp rode a Yamaha through the slop for overall honors in the 250cc Intermediate class , sco ring 2-} moto scores. Tommy Cureton (H on ) won t he first moto but dropped back considera bly in rnoto two and ended up t hird overal l. T om m y Hudson , who 's consistency record over th e pa st year is most adm irable , fi ni shed second over all with 3-2 scores. Bob "Superm a n" Po pe d id it again today, ta king his Maico to th e oveall in . the O ver-Sf Junio r class. T he DeSoro, Texas resi de nt re peated his Lake W hitn ey overall performance bu t the victory was even easier a t Rio Bravo. " Su per m a n" Pope proved to be a brilliant mud rider. mu c h to the d ismay of second overall Ala n Da vis and third pla ce Keit h Ak ins. Scott Buscanyi power ed the T exas Yam aha YZ 400 to vict ory in the Open Intermed iate class after d emolish ing his ch allengers in th e second m oto . Bu sca n yi employed h is physical strength to muscle t e big Yamaha th rough the mud . Second overa ll was Joe Balcum and third Kary Don Smith Houston locals swept the Minicycle classes. Their strength and track familiarity proved overwhelming. Angie Scott (Russell Allen Kawasaki) , the defending . 50cc Mini Mini Champion, was chased by Bl ake Garland and Scot! ' Thomas throughout the two motos, but won both despite the strong challenges. It was much the same story in th e Junior Minicycle class.
