Darrell White (Stubbs Su zuki) . th e premier Houston based minibiker , was untouchable both motes and convincingly won the Sen ior Minicycl e class . Lake Whitney winner Bryan Taylor was not at all pleased with a th ird in one moto and a DNF in the opposite. White had few problems with either moto ; his holeshots and confidence carried him through the day's proceedings and into a challenging position to Taylor for the championship. Results MINI MINI: 1. By Diane Polley MINERAL WELLS , T X, APR. 29 Will Alford returned to his winning ways at Mineral Wells after a (our month streak of bad luck . To begin with , Alford showed Mike Polley that th e "old man" ca n still climb hills when he took his 370 Bultaco up the 400 foot hill in 11;54 seconds. Alford took another 370 Bultaco (with a few modifications) over in 11;80 seconds for the 500cc class win. To top off what must rank as on e of his most successful events yet . he set the fastest time of the day in the Exhibition class after toppling another youngster , James Blanton (750 Tri ), from the top . Alford 's time of 11:03 seconds firmly esta blished th e fastest run of the da y. Blanton had thought his first rid e of 11;15 seconds would do the job for him but he had to settle for first in th e 750cc class. A ride of 11;16 seconds in the Exhibition " class ga ve him second in that class. The Texas H illclimbers Association tired something a littl e different. They invited 4X4's to come try th e hill. There were 12 entered in the four classes. As this was their first attempt, there were a few bugs to be worked out. but the vehicles ran well. Several made it over the top . It looked almost as hard to climb down as it did to climb up. J.S . Coleman driving a Toyota jeep, had the fastest ride of all . taking 17;11 seconds to get over the top . The 4X4' have more trouble negotiating the ledges in the hill than the bikes and if they jump there's more chance of tearing something up. A couple of them were making weird noises after they ran; they hoped to do better next time. Results MINI MINI: 1. John Mord 1250 ft .l; 2. Rodney Dawes 1220 tt.l: 3. John Hendrick 132 ft .l; 5. Screaming Vitus rounded corner one on top with Larry Chvatal , Bert Weaver. and Gary Yager in pursuit. After lap one, it was apparent Meie r had things well in hand . and attention focused on th e ra gin g battle for second. Ch vatal held th e runnerup position to the finish . with Weaver and Yager freight training along behind. Meier again left th e start line fir st in heat two . and disappeared from the field within two laps . Weaver jumped into second , a nd he was hound -dogged by Yage r. Dozbaba nabbed fourth and Chvatal was pressuring the front runners from fifth . Dozbaba dumped the works on lap five as Chvatal avoided the trouble and moved to fourth. McCain scrambled from sixth to fourth , getting past Chvatal with less than half a lap to th e finish . At th e flag it was a runaway victory for Meier , with W eave r second. and Yager a close third. The IOOcc rid ers decided to show their stuff in the opening race . as Kelly Baalman picked off the lead . Baalman's victory dreams disappeared when he slid out in a corner. handing David Horinek the lead. David's lead onl y lasted one lap before he piled his Suzuki in the off camber corner which' had · claimed.... Baalman a . lap p reviousl y. David Green now had his turn in front as Horinek re -started dead last. Green stretched his lead out to an easy win, and Horinek went WFO through the pack to second. The second go 'rou nd turned into a tank slapper, as David Green snatched the lead with Horinek in tow . Sliding side by side. out of control. the two Daves played motorized tag at 40 mph for close to four laps on the tight twisting Atwood track. Green finally gained a five second advantage on the top section an<;-·held on for the victory. Larry Chvatal pulled a clear holeshot in moto one of the Open Juniors , with Mark Ginther second and Mark Bantam third. Bantam moved past Ginther on lap two . only to go down at the wall corner, taking Ginther with him. Terry Dietz slipped past the wreck into second with "Jamming Jerry" Jones moving to third. Bantam re ·mounted quickly to hold down fourth . with Rueber fifth. Chvatal had meanwhile pulled to a small, but comfortable lead. as he coasted to the win . Dietz held second, and Bantam charged past Jones for third . Dietz 's blitzkrieg attack netted him the early lead in heat two , with Chvatal tailgating in second. A nifty .pass on the drop off jump put Chvatal in command for the rest of the mot o. Dietz held on to second with Bantam again edging Jones at th e wire for third . Fifty-two riders were on hand for th e event . and 350 spectators br aved strong winds to watch the action . The next KMSA-sch eduled point ra ce / is June 3. Results I MINI 180ccl~ 1. I Belt's comeback IT win in Kansas By Dick Ainsworth LAKE KANAPOLlS , KS, APR . 29 Racing injuries stopped the racing career of "Rocket Ron" Belt for about three years. He made several comeback attempts but very seldom made it to the main. And when he did he usually ran in th e middle of the pa ck . But "Rocket Ron " let everyone know he was back with a very convincing win in the tough 250cc final at the Salinas Coyotes M.C . TT scrambles. And he did it with the charging. wide-open broadsliding style that told everyone that his win was no fluke . Phil Culver won the first heat over Belt while Danny Clarke moved from the 200s to the 250s with a win in the other heat. The final had to be restarted when Scott Novotny crashed and was injured. On the restart Clarke grabbed the lead followed by Culver and Ga ry Schlickau , with Belt buried back in the pack. But Belt flew up to second and then took the lead at th e start of the second lap at the end of th e front chute. It was a three-way battle for the lead for a while' between Belt , Schlickau and Culver until a large cloud of bluish-white smoke poured from Culver's bike and he was out. The 500cc class saw two new Hondas out to break the Yamaha monopoly and they just about did both ending up in the top five. But Denny Byrne. the 1977 AMA National Champ. picked up where he left off last year by defending his number one plate with runaway wins in both the heat and the final. Byrne was gone from the start but Schlickau had Culver (one of the Honda riders) breathing down his pipe while Dan Brooks and Bill Snyder had a battle for fourth . On the last lap Culver got by Schlickau (who won the other heat) while Brooks got by Snyder. • Results MINI: 1. Scon Murray !Yam); 2. Richard Wo~ !Yam); 3. O.C. Buso, Jr . (Yam); 4.
