Rain hits Timber Mountain 100 By Larry Ulrich JACKSONVILLE, O R , APR , 22 T h is reporter doesn 't ge t m any opport unities to ride events. I'm usually working with the Cascade M. C . to put on an event. W hen I do ride, someone else usually wri tes up a sto ry , The Timber Mountain 100 does not draw t he Pentons or Bu rleson or Dick Mann and for that reason does not draw reporters . I rode this event two years ago, had fu n and decided to rid e it again . Enduro ri ders or ISDT types wou ld love this event. This year the terrain brough t b ack m emories of " Bad Rock." Medford a nd Pend leton a re in extreme opposi te corners of the state , bu t have m any sim ila ri ties. " Bad Roc k" started in a small to wn ne ar Pendleto n n am ed ' W eston , a very old historic town . The T im er Mou ntain 100 starts very close to the historic 'restored town of Jacksonville . The big d ifference was that there are no pea fields around Medford . Myself, a racer fr iend , a nd our wives arrived in Jacksonville Sa turd ay morn - ing and chec ked into the Jacksonville Irm. This building was built in 1863 and has been restored and turn ed into a fin e restaurant with a few rooms for re nt upst a i r s . J a ck so n vill e is a cha rmi ng town . Most of the buildi ngs hav e been restored , along wit h many houses . An yon e f ro m northern California or anywhere in Oregon should make this event sometime. Bring th e wives' and girlfrien ds . T hey would love Jackson ville . Saturday the weather was beau tifu l. The cou rse was bea utifu l. Tacky , but not muddy. Tha t n ight , after a fabulou s d inner at t he J a cksonville Inn , it ra in ed . And it ra in ed some more , By m orn in g Denny a n d I contemplated whether we wanted to rid e in the mud or not. Being a Milli can desert lover, Denny 'elected not to rid e , but " why d on 't we d rive out to th e sta rt ing area a nd see what's happening?" W e got there 20 minut es before the start a nd the MRA m ember in cha rge , Mike Ritchie , ta lked m e ~nt o rid ing , Only 30 riders wer e signed up . . A mass start was decided on, in a small mea dow in the woods . Bikes wer e poin ted the wro ng wa>: and ri ders were straddling th e front wheel. Even with on ly 30 riders it got a little ha iry , I ha d the m isfortune of ta ngling wit h a you ng rider in a m u lti -ru tt ed road . I passed a few riders, but the first few m iles were gravel loggi ng ro ads and I'm a little ch icken a bo ut going WFO on them . T hen we got into t he fun stuff. Creek beds scattered with rocks a nd tight winding trails. A few hills were pretty tough for this wri ter (same age as Jack Ben ny and riding a 175cc ). It's amazi ng how on e little roo t ac ross t he trail can stop yo u r fo rwa rd mo vement up a hill . I didn't know how I was doing , but I fel t rea l good when Denny told me a t the end of lap on e . that I was in 12th place , up from 25th. I ha d n' t planned to stop at the end of lap one on this three -lap event on a 30 · m ile co urse , but m y chain wa s squeaking and I was thirsty. Lubed the chain , drank some Gatorade, gassed m y b ike , a nd cleaned my glasses (blind wit ho ut them) a nd no ot her riders show ed up, so I ch arged off in a good mood , - On the second lap the mud was ge tting a little slick . Mud in t he southern part of the sta te is not nearly as slick as the mud at Trask Mountain b ut I' m not a mud ri der. Only fe ll once beca use of mud and that was on the "d a m ned downh ill." Ab ou t threequarte rs through the lap I was wondering to m yself, " I wonder if they will cut th is to two laps beca use it is ra in in g more now? No , these loca l guys are eating this stuff up ," On th e last big hill before the start/finish area , I cha rge u p in third gea r , then second up on the pegs , losing po wer, shift in to firs t , st u ck the fee t out to paddle and m y left foo t , clad in a . worn-ou t Heckle boot , hung up on the bike and I fell over to the left because I couldn't sti ck my foot ou t. Then I either had to go down and try aga in or push. I elected to push and al most had a heart a ttack , When I came across t he fin ish lin e to get my check and start the third lap , the ma n asked if I just finished my second la p . I said "yes" and he sai d "we cu t it off at two la ps." Only 60 m iles of ri di ng , but I was glad to quit , I was bushed a nd ha d finis hed 1I t h ove rall (14 finished) . Ma ybe I'll d o bett er next time. It was a lot of fun and the sponsoring club (MRA) had laid ou t a fine cou rse. • Results 1. LofTY Hooper 1250Mail; 2. Louie Booth 1125 Suzl; 3.
