Doug Renno took second the first mota, but got off on the dropoff the second mota to DNF the race, and Jack Gill 's second moto runnerup finish combined with his first -mote no -start gave him eighth overall, ful riders as he won not onl y the 250cc Junior Division II race but captured second in the 500cc Junior class as well. Ritchey can be expected to climb to the Intermediate ranks before too long due to his late performances. In the first 250cc mota Mark Stroud (Suz) was just out riding the rest and got the best of Ritchey. Then in the second moto Ritchey improved his start and took first place which gave him the overall win . Stroud ended the evening with a fine 1·2 score over Craig Wenner , Mark " Moose" Anderson (Hus), T im Woods (Amx) , Scott Liebenow, and Ken Coover. The 500cc Junior class was somewhat more challenging for Ritchey who met up with a few evenly matched riders. Ted Selry gunned out in front in the first moto and edged Ritchey out of the lead so he had to settle for second. Gary Lee Cagle was the third place runner. Then in the second moto Cagle got on the gas and aced out second place Mike Hair, who advanced from fifth in the first round. Ritchey diced right behind those two while Selry was demoted to fourth . The overall score for the night ended up in this order: Cagle, Ritchey , Selry , Hair , Tim Woods, Doug Rand, Jim Castillo, and Ray Hoffman. His Yamaha collided into Vince VanHook's Maico to make things exciting at the first turn , So those two were out of luck while Tim Lunde (Yam) stretched his lead out and held it straight to the checkered flag , Lunde had a super night and not onl y did he win this event but hooked the second place 250cc Pro cash . Gary Jones trailed Lunde to the finish line in second . This was a busy evening for Gary as he not only raced in this race but competed in the 250 and 500cc Pro classes as well. Griewe wins on third Corona try By Ron Lawson CORONA, CA, APR. 27 "I've got a lot of work to do now because of you ," race director Ron Crandall was saying to the winner of Corona's 250cc Pro class. " Now I have to go out there with the 'dozer and rearrange those stadium jumps so you can't go through them so fast. " " I don't care" Don Griewe replied, " I' ll just go through the new jumps even fasterl " Crandall was joking about Griewe's surprising ability to fly over a very difficult section of Corona's night MX course much smoother than any other rider. Griewe used this ability coupled with a strong performance to take his very first Pro win Friday, a very impressive feat considering it was only his third try in that class. When they shot off the line for moto one, Griewe and his KX were on top with Jerry Raymer (Yam), John Greenway (Hon), Marty Miller and Danny Jean (Suz) following. Greenway passed Raymer on lap three and started closing on the leader and soon they were battling for the top spot. On the same lap , Miller dropped out' of the race with a destroyed front wheel, letting Jean take over fourth place, Jean then inherited another spot when Raymer went down , but he had little chance of climbing any farther because Griewe and Greenway had developed a strong lead , It was the la p before the white flag came out that Greenway found an opening and took the lead for himself, leaving Griewe to follow in the remaining laps . Jean also fell back before the finish, giving third pla ce to Mark Barnes (Ya m ). . Round two saw Gri ewe grab the early lead again with Greenway on his tail once more. This time , however , Greenway fell early in the race and Raymer was the only rider left to do battle with the leader. Greenway only lost a couple of places when he went down, and it took" him littl e time to work his way up to third. But the lead was strictly a two way affair now between Griewe and Raymer. They were pushing each other to the limits and the duel went the entire distance , but Griewe managed to hold out and he came across the line first to collect the cash. Greenway got second overall and Raymer was third , Greenway made a comeback in the 125cc Pro class by taking the biggest chunk of the money home, but he had to fight Marty Miller and John Silva (Suz) every inch of the way. Miller led most of both motos, but it just wasn't his day and crashes knocked him out of the running both times. Silva remained upright to take two seconds behind Greenway.
