APR . 22 Billy "Sugar Bear" Grossi. back in action and looking as impressive as ever, turned out to race the 250cc and Open Expert classes at Watsonville. This was Grossi 's first race since being injured back in J a nu ary. and before the race he admitted that he planned to " take it easy" while he got used to his new bike a nd got back into t h e swing of co mpetition . He was riding one of t he new 420cc KTM's in the Open class and will be sponsored by KTM and Moto-X Fox for the 500cc Nationals. His 25 0cc machine was a lso a KT M but it was a yea r old practice bike. .W hen· the O pen Expert race started Gross i too k it easy . just like he promised . for about 50 feet. T ha t was enough to put hi m in the m id d le of the pack at the exit of turn one. From there he began to pick his way t hrough traffic. enjoying t he feeling of racin g once again. By the fift h la p of the nine-la p race Grossi was ru nning in second place behi nd J im Lesniewsk i (Mai). Grossi got by to take the lead but dropped back to second on the same lap whe n he ta ngled wit h a lapped rider out in the back sec tion . Lesni ewski sta yed out front for the rest of th e .moto and took the win. The second Open Expert moto saw Jerome Heibarger (Suz) out in the lead by the third lap with Dean Wiggins (Mai) hot on his tail. He ibarger and Wiggins put on a cro wd -p le asin g dice with _Wiggins try ing at ever y opportunity to slip by and Heibarger holding him off at each corner. Grossi and Lesniewski were both back in th e middle of the pack. Lesn iewski had go tten th e holeshot but some t hing happen ed out in the back sect ion and he had lost quite a few places . Grossi was running well but seemed content to stay where he was and just practice. Wiggins kept the pressure on and finall y got his chance coming around th e bottom of the hill by the windmill. Heibarger lost traction as he started back up t he hill a nd Wiggins took the opport unity to power int o the lead. staying there for the rest of the la p to take the checkered and the overall . Heibarger had finished poorly in moto One and did not figure among the top overall winners . Lesniewski ended up 10 th in t he second go around and got a fifth overa ll whi le Grossi 's second moto sixth place netted hi m third overall . Second went to Ra ndy Losh who had put in two very consistent motos , finis hing third in each . Duane Inr orf a nd his son Roger found their trip to Watsonville wort hwhile as bo th finished well in their respective races . Du a n e rode h is Yamaha to a second overall in the O ld Timer class whi le you ng Roger swept bot h motos of t he IOOcc Novice division . As it turned ou t th e Old Timer and I OOcc Nov ice classes were combined . wit h t he big guys getting a 15 second head start . About three-quarters of t h e way through the m oto Roger m oto red past his dad on the way to victory . He 'd better learn to be a little more carefu l . .. it's not smart to m ake your sponsor look bad. Rich Goldberg borrowed a fr iend's H usky for the O pen Novice race and ended up doing pretty well on t he unfamiliar machi ne . " I' Y . never••• e
