The Bees Motorcycle Club and Yamaha Motor Corporation. USA hosted on e of th e most exciting h illclimbs ever and two ride rs. ou t of over 500 trying to conquer the 1,500 foo t mountain . left feeling p leased with th emsel ves'. At least 19 .000 people wat ch ed the climb , ma king it th e most su ccessful in Widowmak er history. Althou gh most of th e exci te me n t and unusua l bik es are centered in th e larger classes. ' there we re a fe w excep tio ns in o t her cl a sses. Mik e Polley, fro m T exas. was ridi ng a 370cc Bul taco tha t was exten ded eight inc hes over stock. He h ad over 16 inch es of trav el at the rear wheel and to ge t th e need ed dam peni ng Mike added a thi rd shock on th e rea r . It m ust have wor ked . He returned hom e with th e win in the 370cc class . Polley went ou t of bo unds a t 525 feet on h is fir st rid e a nd had to wai t until the second round . to sew things up. Hi s next rid e of 613 feet took him a bove the beaten pa th a nd into th e brush that covers th e hill . Polley sweated a little when fellow Texan, Will Al ford, came within 12 feet of bea ting h im on the very next I run ; a ride on his Bult aco of 601 feet nett ed seco nd p lace. The 370 's h ad cleared the hill for the 500cc class. Meanwhile. the O pen class had fin ished t heir runs on the next lane , and W illard Kinzer , on his 11OOcc four -cylinder Honda , had ta ken th e win on his first try . Somehow he had gotten pa st the sagebrush (t he riders call them puckerbushes) u p to the 655 foot mark, and wh ile the res t of the riders were tryi ng to better his m ark. Willard sat back. wa iting to see if he was go ing to get beat. Bu t they didn't and he went ho me with first place. Rider position in th e Exhib ition clas s is determined by draw and the lat er you ride . the better chance you hav e to en ter t he win ner's circle. The path gets beare..down a little more by ea ch bike and . hopefully . some mo re of th e puckerbushes get knocked out of th e way. As th e big bikes were running on a completely new lane. they need ed all th e help they co u ld get. Ea rl Whets ell di dn't let that bother him , even if he did ge t a bad d raw . Whetsell a nd his 1080 cc Honda. with 'a m et a l bladed ti re , called th e "Ditch Witch " came ou t of the hol e in go od sha pe . At 600 feet he was cr u ising and when he passed 1000 feet people on th e h ill began mo ving out of the wa y - he j ust kept on moving and after wha t seemed forever went over the top of Widowmaker. Whetsell became onl y th e seco nd m an to ever top the 1.500 foot mountain . Jim True did it in 1976 on a 1500cc H a rley. But he had go ne out of bounds a t 1,200 feet and another person had • " '.' t ... . ' ." , - ! , "
