Gell JEAN , NV . AP R . 15 Leonard Sikorski, on a Valley Cycle 250cc Yamaha , cruised to the overall win in th e Jackrabbits M.C . Motorcycle Racing Association of Nevada hare scrambles. 30 The weather was perfect . a nd the Jack rabbits laid out a cha llengi ng and exhausti ng 35 mil e course that eac h fini sher had to make th ree laps on. The circ ui t fea tured a bottleneck , monster hill with huge rocks for riders that ventured off'the trail. The course then made a trek across wide-open soft sand that turned to t reach e ro u s whoopdies as the bikes rode over them. After crossing a dry lake , you headed through " Bee r -Bottle Pass ," a winding , Pikes -Peak type hillclimb through th e mountains with 20 -to 100foot dropoffs to either sid e . When the banner dropped , it was Sikorski and Kevin Davi s, riding a Ma ico 250cc for the Veg as Cycle team . pull ing dual holeshots. In th e exci te ment of th e dice. Sikorski forgot to turn on t he gas pet cock after the sta rt. Leonard soon ca me to a stop and Da vis roosted away. Sikorski got going again and caught Davis after the big hill . only to get a little off the course. hit some rough ' stuff. and go over the bars. Davis was gone again . The next time Leonard caught Davis , he made it stick , because the transmission on Kevin's Maico was locked up solid. With all that out of the way , Sikorski ci rc u la te d unmol ested to victory . two minutes ahead of second over a ll , secon d 250 cc Expert Rod Ahl strom on the Der Weinerschnitzel KTM . Although Camp Rock Road is one of the closest racing sites to the Los Angeles area , the turnout was small; the gas crisis played the biggest part in holding down the entries. It was a beautiful morning as the Amateurs and Experts were poised along the start line , impatiently waiting through the on e-minute hold before the banner dropped. When t he banner dropped , the roar of engines was heard first and then the dust cloud was seen form ing with thin lines wea ving their way ahead of the pack. At the bomb Bruce Ogilvie had al ready moved into the lead on a Yamaha YZ400 from 'R ex Staten's stables. Bruce had gone through two transmissions in as many races . cracking the cases in both instances , so his friend " Rocket Rex" had come to the rescue with one of h is machines. Wildman Paul Christensen. who recently picked up a sponsorship from Dick Allen 's Yamaha in Newhall, dropped into the wash past the bomb in second place with Gary Conners close on h is rear wheel. Fullerton Yamaha's big m an, Lee Scheffers, was th e next to follow , with Mike Eckardt , ou t for the fir st time in quite awhile , m oving up in th e fifth spot.
